Best summation EVER!

[–] paequ2 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right now I have it at 24c and that's comfortable. During peak summer I have it set to 26c and I wish I could go a little lower...

Uff. 28c sounds tough. How do you sleep? I wake up sweating without any blankets at 26c. Do you have windows open? Fans?

Nice! I don't actually knows maths! 😆 Is there a better summation out there?? I gotta know.

Even a better summation than this? 😸

Currently, Actual Budget is not available via Flathub. They do offer a .flatpak file on the releases page, but it would be nicer if they were on Flathub.

Vote to get Actual Budget on Flathub! 🗳

Ah, yes. I remember the summer we had Google Chome. Then Google killed it off, like they always do, and they relaunched/rebranded it as Chrome.

anti-configurable systems

Yep! This has been my experience too. Once you want to do something that the devs didn't build, then you have to fight the OS.

Neat. I've been thinking of doing something similar. My parents currently use a Mac, but they mainly just use the web browser. I was thinking of switching them to VanillaOS at some point.

mother is using Opensuse Aeon and my father in law is using Fedora Silverblue

How long have they been using those distros? Do you or they have any preferences for Aeon or Silverblue?

[–] paequ2 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

what’s keeping YOU from switching to an atomic distro?

I tried switching to VanillaOS a month ago. I had a hell of a time getting my niche use-case to work, consisting of using Syncthing to sync my Obsidian notes to a server via Tailscale. Apparently, I had to create a custom VanillaOS image just to install Tailscale? Also, I couldn't get wl-copy to work. Also, docs were out of date and missing.

See notes: https://lemmy.today/post/25622342/14849341

I like Arch because I have control over the system. At least with VanillaOS (not sure about other immutable distros), it seems like I'm supposed to give up control or fight with the system to let me do what I want.

I actually have accidentally bricked my Linux system in the past, but that was a long time ago and I learned from the experience. So it's not a problem I currently have.

I still haven't gotten to doing this, but actually, I was thinking the locked down nature of VanillaOS might be fine for my parents. They currently only use their Mac for browsing the web and not much else. Seems like VanillaOS might be a good fit for users that don't have very demanding computing needs.

All of the apps I use play very nice with scaling ... with the exception of apps...

Sssssssssoooo... it sounds like not all of the apps you use work with scaling?

Are home alarm systems worth it? I'm talking about something like ADT or Vivint, with window and door sensors, and automated police calls.

Are those monthly subscriptions worth it? Do you guys have them? Does anyone have any stories where having an alarm system made a break-in situation better? Are they just snake oil?

I found some thread on the Discord saying that you should

install using abroot should be the Best option

But then nobody posts how to do that...

Have any VanillaOS 2.0 Orchrid users here successfully installed Tailscale?

I'm trying it out for the first time and reading the handbook here: https://docs.vanillaos.org/handbook/en/updates

However, I noticed the page says:

This guide is for Kinetic (22.10), not Orchid.

And when I tried running command to check for updates, I got this.

$ vso update-check
Error: unknown command "update-check" for "vso"
Run 'vso --help' for usage.
ERROR unknown command "update-check" for "vso"

I could wait for the normal update job to run, but I'm being impatient. :)

Again. From the beginning.

The full quote in dirty imperial units:

I live my life a quarter mile at a time. Nothing else matters: not the mortgage, not the store, not my team and all their bullshit. For those ten seconds or less, I’m free.

How was this translated to metric?

How do map updates work? (self.organicmaps)

How often does Organic Maps pull map updates from OpenStreetMap? Can I manually trigger the update or do I have to wait? Does the update happen automatically or do I have to delete the current map data I have and then redownload it?

I've been messing around with Magic Earth and Organic Maps recently.

I immediately noticed that when I type a home address in Magic Earth, the app can take me to the exact house on the block.

However, when I type the same home address in Organic Maps, the app can only take me to the street where the house is. It can find the exact house.

Why is this the case? I thought both Magic Earth and Organic Maps used the same map data behind the scenes...

I have pretty simple, straightforward finances. I don't need any pro features.

Does anyone have any shoutouts for their preferred tax preparation software?
