Sorry everyone but you're all missing the obvious. You see that APPARENTLY there's no WC in the bathroom? Well there you go. When you're done, close the door, and it's nicely mimetized as a drying cabinet 😎

The discussion I stumbled upon, about this SSH app for Android, is really worrying. Will Google really manage to make it impossible to root your phone?

But there's more to this, it's more complicated. In the Big Picture, Google has every incentive to make these changes — they lead to more security, and they're aligned with Google's corporate goals as well.

  • When talking to users, Google will emphasize control over hackers.
  • When talking to stockholders, Google will emphasize control over users.

Edit: I disagree with "they lead to more security". That's not "security", let's not turn words upside-down.

I'm desperately looking for antonyms or somewhat opposites to "procedural". Checked on some antonym dictionaries but didn't find anything. More specifically it's about "procedural knowledge".

"Unplanned" or maybe "creative" could be some possibilities, but I wonder if something more appropriate could be found.

All possible suggestions greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! Together they led me to choose "exploratory" as somewhat opposite to "procedural". There's a huge variety of possibilities, but this one seems to fit my context well :)

Does anyone know of an open-source alternative to Google's "Messages" app, which takes care of SMS/text messages on my phone?

I was looking for open-source alternatives on PlayStore and F-Droid but can't really find anything – most apps seem to target some extra purpose than simply handling SMSs.

(Edit: I'd like to stay away from the "Simple Mobile Tools" line because I don't know if it's open source, and I don't like the way they promoted some apps – forcing users to update to pro and similar.)

Cheers!

It seems this community is being targeted by ad bots. I see all of them come from a @szmer.info instance (or?). Maybe it should be banned?

I'm on Ubuntu 20.02, and have the older 102 version of Thunderbird installed from the http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ppa/ubuntu ppa.

I wanted to install the new "supernova" – but not from snap or flatpack – so I downloaded the linux tarball from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/thunderbird/all/ and followed the installation instructions.

As far as I can see I have all required libraries, but when I launch thunderbird it complains that

XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /opt/thunderbird/libxul.so:
libXtst.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Couldn't load XPCOM.

I can't find any libXtst on apt, but I do have the latest libxtst6. So I don't understand the problem.

Anyone else has this problem and maybe a solution? Cheers!

Edit: I see that it's available on the beta ppa, but that's only for Ubuntu 22.02+. Probably I just have to wait until it's available in the stable ppa too...

The shadows are wrong too. The people at the front seem to have a strong light source from their left (but not all angles are correct); the ones at the back, from ahead of them.

As Netflix and producers of toilet paper know well, people in the end are happy to pay for things they like or need. But Google and its like have discovered that instead of selling stuff to me, it's much more profitable to sell me to others.

No thanks.

I tried "Better"bird for around a month, a year or so ago. Until I hit a bug and submitted a bug report and got this reply:

That's best reported as a Thunderbird issue with exact steps to reproduce.

and later this:

As a first step, we suggest to install the current ESR 91 version of Thunderbird in parallel and see whether the issue exists there.

I personally don't see what's the point of using an email client, if it refers to another email client for submission of some bugs, or if it asks you to install another email client to solve them. I told them and they explained that they're a small team and that

BB is a TB downstream project (fork) and we cannot possibly fix all 14.000 upstream issues.

The turning-point for me was that they simply closed my bug report and, when I told them that that was a let-down, they said:

Users like yourself, who refuse to cooperate or support the project via a donation, are a total let-down indeed, especially if they feel entitled to get a fix.

which was unfair because I do recurring donations to all software I use regularly. But OK, I can simply donate directly to Thunderbird and use that directly.

So I went back to Thunderbird and have been using it without problems since then; they fixed that and other bugs in the meantime. Thunderbird supports all major forms of authentication from what I've seen, so I use it for my work account and other free accounts, all in one.

Mozilla:

Mozilla opposes this proposal...

I wish they took a stronger stance like Brave:

We won’t be shipping WEI support

C'mon Mozilla, show some gonads.

I'm a member of the EFF, and its activities are great, but understandably have slightly more focus on USA-related matters. I say "but" just because I don't live in the USA.

Are there similar foundations that operate and focus/prioritize more on an international level? I don't manage to find any, but probably I'm doing the wrong kind of search.

I don't understand why so many opinion pieces and news keep on saying that Web Environment Integrity could be abused and that's why we should oppose it. This misses the point a great deal.

Implementation of Web Environment Integrity in browsers IS ITSELF AN ABUSE, because I have the right to go around the web without continually proving who I am, even less against a 3rd party.

It's as if someone said that some officer (and not even a government one) should always be by your side when you go out, ready to certify who you are, whenever you speak with people on the street – and even with friends. Would you accept that?

Are we totally out of our minds??
