Right! But, if you zoom out, it's not exactly too wild. Ground squirrels have voles beat in size and they have habitat overlap with both living underground. Additionally, dietary shifts give animals the flexibly to respond to changes in the environment plus foraging risks and opportunities. It's been known since the early 2000's that squirrels can supplement some of their diet with insects or bird eggs/baby birds. Knowing this, it starts to make a lot more sense ground squirrels would hunt voles, as the environment is rapidly changing, they're known to already hunt a bit, and voles could be their annoying neighbor.

A ground squirrel with cheeks stuffed with nuts, seeds or grains, is a common sight. But a new study provides the first evidence that California ground squirrels also hunt, kill and eat voles. The study, led by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the University of California, Davis, is the first to chronicle widespread carnivorous behavior among squirrels.

The Israeli army has launched a new set of attacks on the Kamal Adwan hospital, sparking a fire that rendered the last functioning intensive care unit (ICU) in northern Gaza out of service.

Overnight on Tuesday, the hospital endured Israeli shelling, as well as the use of exploding robots near its grounds, Al Jazeera reporter Moath al-Kahlout reported.

UN Security Council members warned on Wednesday about Israel’s illegal settlements and violent actions in the Occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, Anadolu Agency reports.

Some demanded a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Khaled Khiari, UN assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East and Asia and the Pacific, told the Security Council of the “relentless Israel settlement expansion near the Occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem,” and said that “in Gaza, the ceasefire is long overdue.”

A new report by The New York Times reveals Aaron Siri, an attorney for President Trump’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services Robert F., Kennedy, Jr., filed a petition to the FDA in 2022 to revoke approval of the polio vaccine on behalf of the Informed Consent Action Network — a move that threatens decades of progress in nearly eradicating one of the world’s most devastating diseases. Siri is currently assisting Kennedy in selecting nominees for top health policy positions in the incoming Trump administration.

Public Citizen health experts issued the following statements: “The United States has been a leader in the global fight to eradicate polio, which is poised to become only the second disease in history to be eliminated from the face of the earth after smallpox,” said Public Citizen Campaign Director for Global Vaccines Access Liza Barrie. “Undermining polio vaccination efforts now risks reversing decades of progress and unraveling one of the greatest public health achievements of all time.”

"Trump’s pick for FDA-head, Dr. Marty Makary, recently tried to dismiss RFK Jr.’s dangerous position on vaccines as a thing of the past.” said Public Citizen Senior Health Researcher Michael T. Abrams. “This reporting on the Trump transition strategy suggests that threat from RFK Jr.'s positions is clear and present.”

Public Citizen calls on the Senate to reject Kennedy’s confirmation and ensure that our federal health leadership is grounded in science and truly dedicated to protecting public health.

Yes, always make a new alias anytime an email address is requested. This helps prevent tracking and gives you more control over spam emails. Get spam? Pause/delete the alias! While it can sound like a lot of work, it's a one time thing and then your password manager handles the rest. Also, ensuring you can send emails from the alias is always ideal too. Otherwise, the company will not recognize the email and they'll have your main email address you were trying to obfuscate.

With the deterioration of our ecosystem, it makes sense lifespans will decrease. But this one seems fishy. At the turn of the century, which preceded the discovery of antibiotics, the average life span was 32. Back then, childbirth was actually dangerous and the amount of kids dying under 3 years old was wild. These were the primary reasons for the 32 year average lifespan. Which means 26 in todays world is almost certainly a sign of fowl play...

It’s critical to understand the practices of UnitedHealth and the wider health insurance industry as systemic and bound up with the larger ensemble of corporate rule. The problem isn’t just that health insurance CEOs callously deny coverage to patients to extract massive profits — it’s that if those CEOs didn’t do this, their boards of directors and shareholders would demand their replacement.

A new study reveals the secret to the antioxidant that allows the bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans to withstand radiation doses 28,000 times greater than what would kill a human.

Today, Americans for Tax Fairness released a new report detailing key beneficiaries of the Trump tax policies: billionaire nepo babies. Alongside cheeky profiles of inheritors wasting family fortunes on failed vanity businesses, medieval church purchases, lifestyle brands, private jets, and more, the report examines the startling realities of billionaire wealth growth. Example: 30 of the largest billionaire dynasties have seen their fortunes swell by 54% over the past nine years, while the wealth gap between the top 0.01% and bottom 90% has reached its highest level since the Great Depression.

The image at the top of the page is from one of the figures provided in the research paper this article discusses. But the reason it's difficult to imagine is because the concept isn't as straightforward as it sounds. Here's one of the helpful figures:

This does a great job showing how they're both antiparallel and rotating in different directions, as well as how it looks when scaled up.

A new class of magnetism called altermagnetism has been imaged for the first time in a new study. The findings could lead to the development of new magnetic memory devices with the potential to increase operation speeds of up to a thousand times.

Altermagnetism is a distinct form of magnetic order where the tiny constituent magnetic building blocks align antiparallel to their neighbours but the structure hosting each one is rotated compared to its neighbours.

A day after Luigi Mangione was arrested and charged as the alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, independent journalist Ken Klippenstein on Tuesday published what he said was the 26-year-old’s highly reported on manifesto.

The existence of the handwritten document found on Mangione when he was taken into custody in Pennsylvania on Monday was confirmed by the New York Police Department, and major media outlets have quoted from it, but none had released it in full.

The "confirmed" manifesto can be found here: https://www.kenklippenstein.com/p/luigis-manifesto

The U.S. Justice Department yesterday urged the Supreme Court to deny two requests for the high court to intervene in state and local lawsuits that seek to hold Big Oil companies accountable for lying to the public about their products’ role in climate change. The briefs filed late yesterday in Sunoco, et al. v. Honolulu and Alabama, et al. v. California, et al. by Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar mark the second and third times that the Biden administration has filed briefs urging the high court to allow such cases to continue advancing in state courts.

Israel has unleashed a massive military attack to neutralise Syria with hundreds of airstrikes. A senior Israeli source has called this “the largest air operation carried out by its Air Force in its history”, according to Al Jazeera. Despite saying its airstrikes would ‘continue for days’, Israel has stressed that it is ‘not intervening’.

Dark Reader is the best extention for this, pretty sure it's open sourced too!

In 2019, the advertising/data science company System1 became the majority owner of Startpage. Based on this, I'd say it's worth finding an alternative to Startpage.

I'm pretty sure just using the "sudo dnf update --refresh" command in terminal will fix this problem. It will ask you verify those packages new repositories. After that, you should be good using the store again for updates. This is assuming you upgraded from Fedora 40 before these errors occurred.

I love the KDE plasma theme Underworld. It's definitely black and pairs well with a ton of stuff. I like Breeze Dark as the global theme, Ball10050's Black color, and Underworld for the plasma style. This makes it all primarily black.

I trust the DivestOS team while I have no clue who runs Cromite. Plus, Bromite being abandoned made me look into other options, which makes me trust Divest to keep Mulch running longer than the Cromite team I guess.

Mulch is a mobile chromium browser made by DivestOS (same folks who make Mull). Maybe worth checking out over Cromite.

Be sure to include Nobara and Bazzite, both of which are gaming focused distros. Both are Fedora based, but Bazzite is known more as a SteamOS 3 clone. There's also another gaming focused distro, it just escapes my mind. But I love Fedora KDE as is and then just installing the required software. So I'd say add Fedora, Nobara, and Bazzite for sure!
