I think for Germany it's simply the fact that our infrastructure grew in large parts before the invention of the car, plus it's, compared to the US, very densely populated. So it's easier to create a useful rail system, there isn't enough space in the cities for to many cars, even though there are way to many for my taste.

Ich habe nie angefangen Alkohol zu trinken. Aber finde es schon bemerkenswert wie normalisiert das ist. Wenn wir ne fahrt mit dem Kindergarten machen, beispielsweise. Wenn einer fragt sollen wir auch Limonaden kaufen, ist gleich das "Denkt-denn-keiner-an-die-Kinder" Argument (letztlich zurecht) da. Aber welche Sorten Bier und ob auch Wein und wieviel, wird ausgiebig diskutiert. Ich habe null Problem mit Alkohl trinkenden Menschen. Aber das zu beobachten ist schon irgendwie strange.
