[Important Post] Here's the situation. (burggit.moe)

This post is going to be a long one, to spare you some reading I'll do a TL;DR, but I really would appreciate you reading the whole thing.

TL;DR: Burggit (The Lemmy Instance) will be shutting down July 14th 2024. Due to lack of funding, grievances with the Lemmy software and lack of resources, energy and interest on our part. We'll be giving one month for everyone to move their local posts somewhere else and download their images. shota.nu will not be shutting down, so images/video hosted there will be fine, but they will not be viewable on the Lemmy Burggit since we'll be shutting the webpage down after July 14th 2024.

Now for the whole post.

Back when we started Burggit I was in great health, I was managing multiple sites at a time and constantly adding things to my plate, which were managable while I was in that state. Burggit was an excited project that I asked Burger to set up, because I didn't (and still don't) have the knowledge to maintain. At worst, I thought it could be a fun little place for us and a few friends to mess around and kinda use as a link archive. I even offered to pay for it, since burger is in a difficult financial situation.

Things went well shortly after it was up, we didn't have hardly any users, just a few friends like I originally intended. Then the Reddit API stuff started going in full swing and suddenly people started wanting to join. This was a very exciting time for us as the site grew. It got to the point where my wife even had to help us with managing everything, since she was usually up when Burger and I were asleep. Everything was going rather well.

Then I got sick, I got so sick that I almost died twice, I lost half of my lunge and 2 of my ribs, and I was in and out of the hospital for almost a year. During this time, I could not participate in Burggit, and honestly, I was barely able to fund it. Though I eventually did come back, but it was never like how it was before I got sick.

My financial and physical resources decreased significantly as a result of my health, I can't manage or juggle as much as I could and I will probably forever have a slower paced life because of the events that transpired.

Then there's the Lemmy software. The amount of hoops that burger has to go to in order to bring you this site is ridiculous. To give you an idea of how bad this software is, there's no easy way to check all the images uploaded to the site (such as through private messages). When the obvious concern of potential illegal imagery is brought up to lemmy devs, they shrug and say to plug in an expensive AI image checker to scan for illegal imagery. That response genuinely has me thinking that this is by design, and they want it to be like this. We can't even easily look at the list of registered users without looking through the DB, absolute insanity.

The other thing is there's no real way to manage storage properly in Lemmy, the storage caches every image ever uploaded to any instance forever.

Also the software is constantly breaking.

This site has become more of a burden for us, for me financially as I have been the sole person funding it (aside from like 2 or 3 individuals who donated a bit ago, thank you to those people.) It's just not worth our time anymore and it's not something I want to fund anymore. People seem to like this instance, so much so that it feels like the second it goes down we're made aware of it. But, aside from that we're on our own. We're only federated with a few instances due to the way the threadiverse is, we've been literally locked into our own bubble and have been funding this project and been allocating time (sometimes a lot of time) into making it operational. We just don't have the ability to do that anymore, not unless something big changes, but I don't see that coming.

Now you might be wondering, "What about the Sharkey?" The Sharkey is easy to manage, is widely federated and is easy to manage storage and much cheaper to fund. It doesn't cause even a third of the hassle Lemmy does.

I'm very sorry to make this announcement. Both Burger and I were trying as much as we could to keep this up as long as possible, but it has officially reached a point where we just can't do it anymore.

After getting email working for sister site, https://kbin.burggit.moe, I quickly added it to here too. So password resets should be a thing here now. Kbin has a strict requirement for functioning email to verify users. There's no setting to toggle it off.

Now why am I messing around with Kbin? Well, it's because the future of Lemmy seems to be a bit uncertain, in my opinion. A lot of what people want isn't getting implemented and there's only so much that two main devs can do. So I've been messing around with Kbin in the meantime. I personally like how it can federate with more software, so we won't feel nearly as cut off from the fediverse as a whole vs the Lemmyverse. Signups are open, so you're free to play around with it on there too, if you wish. The same rules from here apply to there too, so keep that in mind.

If you've been experiencing issues with Burggit being slow, this is likely why. Our server host is moving to a new better datacenter. Our disks are being hammered with this move and thus are not able to keep up with writes.

This will definitely cause issues in the meanwhile, however things should be more stable overall once things have settled in at the new DC.

First thing's first I want to establish we are not going to do anything to Burggit as it stands, we have no intentions of retiring the lemmy Burggit. Want to make that entirely clear. What we are talking about here would be As well as the lemmy Burggit.

Burger and I have been talking and we wanted to know if you guys would be interested in any of the following services:

A Burggit Misskey instance (You can get an example of how that looks here )

A Kbin/Mbin instance (It's a lot like Reddit/Lemmy, but more federated, it can federate with all other activitypub stuff. Unlike Lemmy's half-assed federation implementation) We actually do have a burggit kbin up and running at: https://kbin.burggit.moe/ but it's kinda just in the background for the moment, not really a focus.

Or would you like some other instance/service?

We likely won't be making something like a Pleroma/Akkoma instance as we already have https://shota.house which we run and fufills that purpose. For those who want an invite to the Shota House, just let me know! I'll send an invite to any Burggit users who want in. (with some amount of genuine account activity ofcourse.)

Hey guys, it's been a long time. I was sick for awhile, so sick I have 2 hospital visits which almost landed me 6ft under. This is why I've basically been entirely absent the past few months. This has left Burger all alone to do both the public facing PR type stuff (which used to be my territory) and the backend.

Well, my situation is returning to normal, and thus I am also returning to Burggit. I'd like for you to voice your feedback and what you would like to change and any issues you have specifically.

Something I will be changing is, and I hate to be this guy who comes in and does this. I will be removing the 3Dloli community as I personally believe that community violates our at-a-glance policy. I can not tell the difference for most of these images "at a glance" and since I will be the one looking through these sorts of things for moderation. It's best for everyone involved that I am able to make good accurate decisions.

I also know that there's been issues with the Lemmy-NSFW fork being used, some people want us to fork it, make modifications to it and use that. I'm going to shoot this idea down now. Burggit is just me and Burger, there's no one else here, and we do have other things we like working on. We're not maintaining an entire special fork. It's likely that we will just go back to the main Lemmy branch, though I would be open to arguments against that or maybe even suggestions for already existing forks to use.

However, I think The Entire Circus made a good point in this post and personally, I agree with his points.

Anyway this is just kind of an initial post letting you know that I am returning and things will be changing. Hopefully this will be overall a good thing for everyone involved. Happy to be back.

The network Burggit is on is experiencing performance issues. I'd encourage everyone to use shota.nu for right now if you can. I talked to the host about this and evidently it's an upstream issue with the datacenter.

The datacenter is refusing to help out with this and thinks everything is working fine so there's plans for migrating to a new datacenter that are underway sometime soon. So in the meantime, I'm afraid we need to just grin and bear it.

Lemmy errors out if the NFS mount is nonresponsive. It doesn't like not being able to access the huge swathe of pictures that are stored on the server. I've switched the NFS mount to TCP and have it retry the connection every second in an effort to mitigate the severe packet loss.

As I was composing this, the packet loss shot up to 90% so I don't think even that will help...

That's really all I can do for right now. I wish there was more that I could do to resolve this... 😔

Do not ever push to production without testing things first. I went and moved us to the beta branch because this commit caught my eye and I wanted us to have the emoji picker fixed: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/commit/ae4c37ed4450b194719859413983d6ec651e9609

The beta branch was on dockerhub so I thought that it was at least minimally tested. I was sorely mistaken. Lemmy (the backend) itself would load, but lemmy-ui (the actual website that renders everything) would keep crashing when attempting to load. I couldn't roll back because the database was migrated to this beta version and it couldn't migrate back to the old version when attempting to launch said old version.

I had no choice but to restore from backup. We've lost a whole day's worth of posts (anything after 3AM CST.) I'm really really sorry.. blobcatsadpleading

I was just so excited to be able to unveil this, I didn't take my time with actually testing it.

Recursively removed every linked community that points to an instance that defederated us (burggit.moe)

I wrote a script that recursively removed every linked community that defederated us in order to declutter our list of dead communities/communities that nobody can partake in because of the aforementioned defederation.

If you wish to access the community that you wanted to revisit, I recommend that you go to the site where the community is located. Do note that said communities could've been deleted from their respective instances after we were defederated since a defederation means that all contact is cut off between you and the instance who initiated the block.

Some in the matrix have suggested that I run an archive of the ones that were accessible before the defederation went into effect. I do not wish to archive the ones that weren't removed after the defederation went into effect. That's a huge undertaking for one person who already maintains the backend for this site. If you wish, I can temporarily revert the removed communities so that you can run whatever scraping tool you choose and host an archive yourself. I'll give it about a month before I purge every aforementioned community from the instance entirely.

Just figured I'd make a quick post about this. If you find a community which posts content you find highly objectionable and don't want to see any of its posts, the block community button can help you with that.

Basically, you just go onto the page of the community and click the red “Block Community” this will remove any post made to that community entirely from your feed.

I figure a large majority of people already know about this feature, but wanted to help those who might not be aware of it that it exists, incase it might've proven useful to them

We've decided to disallow IRL or 3D NSFL content, this means things like gore, decapitations, suicides and similar intense disturbing depictions.

We will be allowing 2D Depictions (also known as Guro). However, when posting Guro content it is suggested you clearly mark it in the title and required that you embed/link to the image/video/media in the post body and not in the actual URL field.

We were inspired to think about this particular thing as lemmynsfw (another instance) was discussing it as well and made some good points. The main one being that there's no separate NSFL tag, so people can't properly filter it out.

Also, being 100% frank, it's not the sort of thing we want to be tasked with potentially moderating and/or looking at.

So, we made the possibly controversial decision to disable downvotes. Let's talk about it briefly.

Why we disabled the downvote button.

On Reddit, the purpose of downvotes is and always was to make it so irrelevant posts in subs would be pushed down to prop up more relevant content. In practice, they have been used as a flat out "I don't like this" button, regardless of if the content is relevant or not. We have already started to see this be the case in Burggit communities, despite the posts being 100% allowed on Burggit and being entirely relevant in their respective communities.

It is instead recommended that you use the report button if you suspect something to be spam or irrelevant to a community.

On Reddit, it's also frequently used to dismiss/silence legitimate arguments and discussion. We'd rather avoid this happening on Burggit, we want this to be a place where people can freely and openly discuss ideas/opinions.

In the end, we couldn't really find a positive use case for the downvote button. So, we decided to remove it.

So, since we're starting to get some actual traction, even being posted about on the hard R. I figured we should probably have a little post explaining the instance and it's goals.

What Burggit aims to be

Burggit aims to be a platform for Free Thought and Expression. Our goal is to have a place where people can freely and respectfully express their ideas/opinions without fear of being censored because they decided to use the wrong terms/wordings.

We will also not immediately suspend a user for their first infraction, though we will definitely warn them and won't be afraid to take action of it continues.

What Burggit is not

We are not another Kiwifarms, Gab or Voat!

While we're fine with people posting offensive speech and imagery, we won't allow them to use their right to "Free Speech" as a weapon against the overall health of the platform. Threatening, Berating, Dogpiling, Doxxing and otherwise being complete and total assholes to other users will not be tolerated.

Having a different, unpopular opinion on a sensitive topic is fine, but there's absolutely no reason why anyone would not be able to express those opinions respectfully. And if you can't express those opinions without being shitty to other users directly, that's not something we're going to be putting up with.

If we believe that a user of ours is causing problems for our instance or other instances, we will not hesitate to deal with them.

But what does it mean to be shitty?

For clarification I'll add some examples of behavior which would be deemed not okay.

Please note, this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Calling out death to a group or individual
  • Targeting another individual/user regardless of reason (Discussing something in a way which could be percieved as rude doesn't count, some people argue passionately and that's okay.)
  • Going out of your way to cause trouble with other friendly instances
  • Attacking someone's character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than addressing the substance of the argument itself. Also known as Ad hominem's
