Do you have any recommendations for the matrix client ? (Preferably privacy focused) Should I avoid desktop client or mobile client or having both is fine ?
Hi, I recommend the first-party client: https://element.io/download. Yes having both is fine, and is probably recommended so that you have a way to restore your key if you have to reinstall either client. On Android, if you're privacy conscious, get the F-Droid version. Since that doesn't have Google Play Services integrated. Both the desktop version and android version are free and open source software.
Does the homeserver we sign up with matter? I'd rather not have my account nuked for saying "loli".
Some home servers have rules against that stuff. You'd need to consult the rules of the homeserver you're thinking of signing up for.
Has registration been opened yet? If so, how do I register? If not, can I have a homeserver account?
Sure. Go ahead and DM the account name you want and I'll get you registered. I don't know when/if ever I'll open up registrations as this is currently running on my home server box.
