I live in Europe and in my country specifically I noticed most people don't use any cast iron pans at all. We all use non stick or regular pans here.

What are the (dis)advantages of using cast iron?

My sister in law is about to give birth to her second child. We live on the other side of the country from them. My wife’s parents are visiting from over seas to help with the baby. So Thanksgiving will be a rare chance to get the whole family together. So we are going to their house.

I have decided I want to make everyone a nice traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I’ve got the turkey locked down and mashed potatoes and gravy are non-negotiable for me. As for the rest, I want to make a few quick easy side dishes to round things out and give them a good experience with as little disruption to my sister in law’s house and peace of mind as I can.

So how would you round things out from here? Oh and I’ve already ordered pumpkin and apple pies for dessert.

I've been eating it straight out of the jar and it's pretty good, but I want to do more.

I love the burnt cheese that falls off my quesadillas and into the pan. I always look for the burnt fries (home made or fast food). I grill hot dogs and leave one on the grill until it's black. Same with asparagus. Tonight I was pan cooking portobello mushrooms and oops... yes, I found out I even like burnt fresh diced garlic. I so happy when they started selling "Extra Toasty" Cheeze-Its.

So there it is. (Again no on overcooked steak, pork, seafood, etc.)

I just felt like I needed to come clean lol. Anyone else have a similar "Don't do this" but you love it anyway?

My local grocery store chain opened a new location and they had bone-in Boston pork butt for $0.80/lb as an opening weekend special. I bought the limit of 2 and rode home, happy to have taken advantage of such an amazing deal, only to realize as I placed it in my freezer that I don’t have 67 children, nor am I an Olympic swimmer with a daily 9000 calorie intake. Short of throwing a party for the neighborhood how could I best utilize this meat without 3/4 of it going bad before I finish it all?

What is that one dish your mom, dad grandmother, friend etc taught you. That you can make pretty well now but still does not tastes same as when the original person makes it?

My freezer is full of frozen burger patty’s leftover from a summer party. My family is very sick of eating traditional burgers at point in the year.

Any creative ideas out there?

Are the dishes the same?

I lost a bet to my friend and now I need to dress up like a chef and spend all evening Sunday preparing and serving him and his girlfriend a full 4 course meal. I cook a lot and am confident I can do this well, but I'd also like to hear any suggestions anyone may have to make this an awesome experience. Any dish recommendations? Or maybe tips to make the whole thing extra fancy? We agreed on about a $50 budget* for the ingredients (this is only for food and doesn't include alcohol).

Things they can't/won't eat:

  • Mango
  • Seafood
  • Mushrooms

I was planning on doing like a soup, an app, a main dish, and dessert. What fancy meal would you do in my shoes?

*I don't mind going slightly over budget and I'm also going to make some decisions based on the price of stuff at my butcher.

or, how often do you, personally, replace them? i have a pretty big collection with lots of niche or imported herbs/spices/chilies so it would be like $250+ to do a full restock, and i've only needed to repurchase a few super common ones in the last 5 years so most of mine are several years old.

google says to replace every 4-8mo for ground spices and 1-2 years for herbs. but i feel like that's the same thing as the whole "change your sheets once a week" thing- yes it's ideal, but a good portion of people don't do it as often as they should, and still everything is fine & their life goes on unaffected.

i'm relatively new to adulting and haven't dealt w this yet so i have no clue. also is there anything that lasts super long and doesn't need to be replaced? other than like salt/sugar lol

$1/lb. I just got four apples to test and they are extraordinarily good.

These aren't the cheapest apple's I've ever had (that was like a $0.33/lb. fluke once), but that's the lower range of apple prices here., and these honeycrisp are some of the best.

How do I take advantage of this? If I bought say.... 20 lbs or more of apples, what can I do to preserve them? Spiralize them and save them for later? I think I have a spiralizer. Is it a waste of honeycrisp to make apple sauce from them? Apple chips?

[edit]

How do I choose the best honeycrisp apples?

Hello everyone,

Every friday I make a traditional meal as part of my world-tour on a budget series.

Last week I made Lohikeitto, which was delicious, but also surprisingly easy to prepare!

Now am I wondering. What dish comes to your mind when I say: traditional and easy to prepare?

Edit: it would be highly appreciated if it's a meal which could be shared with 4 people!

Thank you!

I have lots of frozen oxtail... I have no idea how to cook them. Last time I tried it was chewy and gross.

Looking for any and all suggestions.

For example, cooking ground beef - using a wooden spoon to break up and stir, etc. My husband uses the same spoon for it once the meat is browned - is that safe to do?

I thought my husband originally bought just a side of beef but no, he bought the whole fucking cow. I have 400 pounds of ground beef and looking for ideas outside of what I normally make with it.

Stay nice y'all but be honest, this is just for some fun.

I'll go first

I don't have a rice cooker, so I cook rice like pasta and drain it in a sieve (and also don't rinse it before cooking)

Other than all the little animals, I’m pretty isolated (rarely a soul to feed)… I’m no fan of inflammatory, processed foods; & I’ve eaten marshmallows only out of sheer boredom (mouth-feel).

The only things I like using them for is setting them on fire, & for dark + white chocolate chip, s’mores-style treats (w/ smashed graham crackers instead of puffed rice, yadda yadda). Yeah, & broiled over spiced sweet potatoes, so…

???

I made crab cakes last night and had way more meat than I realized. Ended up just making a bunch of crab cakes and a remoulade (thanks Serious Eats!). Turned out great, but now I'd like to mix it up a little.

How else can I eat crab cakes? I was planning on maybe thowing a poached egg on one for today. Any other ideas?

So I've read somewhere or heard somewhere that the lemons you buy at the grocery store are covered in a wax and you have to boil the lemon to get rid of this wax before you can create lemon zest, is there any truth to this?

Are you saying I can't just go buy a lemon at WinCo and scrape off the skin and create lemon zest? Apparently there's some kind of wax that I have to remove first or something?

My body has started to reject camenbert, pizza, curries, things heavy in dairy or spice.

I'll live through it every once in a while but I need some ideas for meals that are a treat but not, shit. Like dairy free, gluten free, pizza is good for my tummy but I really want a Chicago Town filled crust hot dog pizza.

I need some treats that don't suck, and won't leave me sitting on the toilet for a day.

I like to cook so that's not an issue, I'm not looking for fast food. Just, treats, something nice and indulgent.

Or am I going to have to live with rice, chicken and veg vs a day on the toilet?

You know, a recipe, ingredient, or seasoning that you've just discovered and now have to (ab)use daily until it gets old? For me, its soft boiled eggs. Randomly thought of them after years of not having any and remembered that I love them. Found the recipe and demolished a dozen eggs in record time lol.

Also seasoned rice bowls for breakfast. I load em up with veggies and mushrooms. And soft boiled eggs. 😁 Super satisfying, healthy, and cheap!

I got an air fryer about a year ago and I hardly ever use it. I’m only cooking for one person but I do enjoy leftovers, so two servings worth of something is key.

It should be noted that I am busy with work and exhausted by dinner time, so something on the simpler side/maybe something I could prepare in advance would be nice too. But I’ll take anything, I’m desperate to use this so called “amazing” device.

I don’t have any dietary restrictions or food allergies.

Thank you!!!
