Hey Hexbear.

Eco for Humans is running a playthrough of the game Eco between November 8th and December 6th (28 days). I'd like to invite Hexbear along since it seems like the kind of game people here may be into. The EfH community runs on a strict no TRASH policy (transphobes, racists, ableists, sexists, homophobes), making server moderation safe and compatible with Hexbear.

If you haven't heard of Eco, it's a society-building game about living on a little planet and marching through the industrial revolution to shoot down an incoming asteroid as it falls out of the sky over the course of 28 days. The little planet you're living on has a fully simulated ecosystem; species may go extinct or the sea levels may rise if care isn't taken to balance economic and ecological concerns. One aspect that makes this game unique is that players can only take a limited number of production specializations (baker, shipwright, chemist, miner, farmer, etc..) meaning that players must band together to trade, or form towns and countries with their own distinct laws and cultures.

Got it recently as a fan of GW2 and the games barely have any resemblance to each other. It is fun so far though I like being able to have AI party members cos I hate playing with mmo randoms.

Any beginner tips would be appreciated

Chinese game post-apocalyptic zombie game about America after an economic collapse and subsequent economic takeover by the Japan that everyone was afraid of in the 1980s but never had its own downturn

The bizarre aesthetics are reason enough to make me interested, but it's got Kojima and Platinum vibes and I for one am very interested in seeing what the Chinese vidya industry continues to export because we're seeing some cool shit

Listen up black ops, Saddam Hussein's doing a react stream, he's just sitting there on Twitch watching funny tiktoks with 30k concurrent. Youtube has authorized a Content ID strike on his palace

:tito-laugh:

I haven't played a CoD campaign since Ghosts, but apparently they've got hacking and lockpicking minigames now? And stealth sections with "press X to punch guy out" gameplay, and open-world missions with, uh, fast-travelling

AAA games really are going through a process of carcinization, it's just all becoming the same "action game with light RPG elements". Genres? Never heard of 'em, the only difference you're getting is if it's 1st person or 3rd person.

Playing this on PC without the soundtrack installed and listening to Yello One Second or Queen on the stereo was peak gaming. No one can top this experience.

The full game is still yet to come. The project's intent is turn the Episode 3 story outline released by Mark Liadlaw (Epistle 3) into a game, resolving the cliffhanger ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

After about a year of on-and-off development of my first project, I plan to release it on 18 Nov 2024. It's a turn based strategy set in a bedroom, where you play with toy army men against your opponent (human or computer).

You can check out the game, play the demo and wishlist here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2776110/Bedroom_Battlegrounds/

And check my tiktok profile for more gameplay shorts: https://www.tiktok.com/@wchcgamedev

Happy to hear what you think!

To the Twitch Community,

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen members of the community voice concerns about how we handle potentially harmful content. There is no place on Twitch for racism, hatred, or harassment of any kind, including antisemitism and Islamophobia. As our community has grown, we’ve endeavored to build Community Guidelines to prohibit these harms.

Twitch is, and will always be, about belonging. Each day, people come together on our service to build communities around shared interests, and to express themselves authentically. For this to be possible, we work hard to ensure that our community is a safe place.

Our Community Guidelines are foundational, and when we find content that breaks those rules, we take immediate enforcement action. This will always be the case.

Millions of streamers, with a wide variety of views and perspectives, spend time on Twitch. We recognize that some content, while allowed on our service, may be objectionable to some members of our community. The views shared by streamers on Twitch are not the views of Twitch nor are they my personal views.

We’re grateful for the feedback and input from our community. Our safety approach continues to build and evolve, as our service grows. We want to ensure that anyone can find their place on Twitch, and remain committed to ensuring that hate and harassment have no place here.

  • Dan Clancy, Twitch CEO

Emphasis mine. This statement seems to take a defensive posture concerning the claims of "antisemitism" on the platform. However, with this message from the CEO of Twitch comes this announcement of changes to the platform regarding "Political Content and Sensitive Social Issues". [tweet]

The full classification, as seen on their website, is below for archival purposes.

Politics and Sensitive Social Issues

VII: Politics and Sensitive Social Issues

Twitch is a place for people to express themselves and discuss the world around them. We require streams to be labeled when the focus of the stream includes discussions and debates about political or sensitive social issues such as discussions about elections, civic integrity, war or military conflict, and civil rights. Examples of content that require a classification label include but are not limited to:

  • Streams featuring former or current political officials if the content includes discussions with these individuals around public policies
  • Live coverage or commentary on elections, civic processes, or election-related disputes
  • Livestreams of protests, rallies, or civil unrest related to civil rights issues or government policies
  • Discussing military conflicts, foreign policy decisions, or national security matters
  • Discussing ideological or socio-political views on topics like gender, race, sexuality, or religion
  • Discussing legislation related to a sensitive social issue such as reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, or immigration

Labeling not required:

Streams containing informational or educational content that aim to share knowledge in a neutral, fact-based manner, rather than engaging in any kind of advocacy for an issue or candidate. For example, sharing the history of how votes in the US presidential election are counted to determine the next President, or merely encouraging individuals to vote or register to vote.

Intermittent mentions of politics, politicians, or sensitive social issues are not required to have the Politics and Sensitive Social Issues label.

It's clear that, to appease the forces of the Zionist Entity, Twitch is now allowing users and advertisers to "self-censor" by opting out of "Political Content and Sensitive Social Issues". However, the loose definition of this category and the caveat at the end of the definition leave a lot to be desired.

Intermittent mentions of politics, politicians, or sensitive social issues are not required to have the Politics and Sensitive Social Issues label.

Feels as though this will leave all the "Gamer" chuds out of the category as they rail on the inclusion of black, trans, queer, etc. people within their games. Does this constitute "intermittent mentions"? Does this fall under "critique"? Who can say.

Also, under "labeling not required" we have this gem:

"Streams containing informational or educational content that aim to share knowledge in a neutral, fact-based manner, rather than engaging in any kind of advocacy for an issue or candidate"

Meanwhile, "Discussing ideological or socio-political views on topics like gender, race, sexuality, or religion" will land you in the "Political" gulag. I wonder, would hosting a stream containing informational and educational content regarding the history of oppression of the queer population be something that does not require a label? Or would the telling of that history be too "ideological or socio-political" in nature and require the "Political" label? How does one tell the history of slavery in America in a "neutral" way?

This might not cause the kinds of "waves" that the Hot Tub / Pool Party / Beach / Bikini / Artistic Nudity meta did. I'm not sure if we'll see the same kind of reversal of policy or excessive policy reworks happening as a result of this change. It does materially impact most of the "political" streamers by allowing advertisers to opt out of those broadcasts, but it remains to be seen how much of an impact that will have on those individuals.

okay, i wrote this out a couple weeks ago when the topic came up, but i lost the text so i just got around to doing a quick list now. this is for @LeylaLove@hexbear.net, @dannoffs@hexbear.net, @comradesharkfucker@lemmy.ml, @bunnygirl@hexbear.net, @Thordros@hexbear.net who were all talking about speedrunning youtube in a thread a month ago, and anyone else interested in good old-fashioned content. please share your recommendations too!

Summoning Salt, obviously

TomatoAnus does really good full speedrun explanations showing all the tricks of the current route. silly and funny, really notable is that he does a short mental health segment every episode where he encourages anyone in the audience who might be struggling. i think it's pretty heartfelt and touching, and he deserves more attention just for that. it seems like depressed people might spend a lot of time watching youtube speedruning content lol (couldn't be me)

How speedrunners beat Half-Life in 26 minutes (SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED - Scriptless)

really you could just go to his channel and watch whatever game you're most interested in. i picked this one because it's a good one but also the mental health segment is early in the video, and i think he deserves more eyes because of those segments

Karl Jobst pretty well known, does a lot of speedrun cheating investigations, also does some drama vids, was one of the guys who exposed the completionist scandal. i think the cheating videos are really interesting too but Running A Tightrope: DOOM's Most Precarious Speedrun is a really great world record progression video with all the new strats and such explained really well, i think this DOOM stuff is worth watching even if you arent all that interested in him or his newer videos. i love how because of DOOM's demo files you can watch runs from the nineties recorded exactly the same as runs from today. great video!

OneShortEye does videos on the adventure game speedrun community, mostly Sierra games from the 80's and 90's. both record progression and speedrun explained type videos. his videos are great, super interesting to see the tricks and stories behind the progress the community makes on these games, and super interesting in depth exploration of the mechanics. i'll recommend How Speedrunners Make Robin Hood a COWARD, one of TWO long-ass videos about Conquests of the Longbow. if you have a favourite kings quest game, he probably has a video about it. really good shit.

Bismuth does really good speedrun explained and videos about tricks, TAS runs, etc. How is this speedrun possible? The Legend of Zelda World Record Speedrun Explained is my recommend, goes through every trick and how it works in the modern route of the first NES zelda.

Osukarui does histories for less popular N64 games, usually ones he personally was involved in, because they are not common games to speedrun. The Incredible Glitches of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine for the N64 is a good sample of the kind of stuff he talks about, and if you like that watch the speedrun history video of the same game, i think it's really interesting stuff

Quake Speedruns Explained explains Quake speedruns. noteable for the chill vibes, watching 1000 runs of a level at once in slow motion with chill music in third person hits just right. The "Impossible" Quake Record is my recommend, if you like it, there are a bunch like that

EZScape Speedruns does speedruns explained type stuff, really good if you are interested in the game. covers a lot of stuff i'm not personally interested in, but there's a wide enough variety that there's probably at least a few hours of stuff you will want to watch if you like speedrun content. my recommendation is Bully Speedruns Are BUSTED | Speedrun Explained. great game, great speedrun!

Maximum does videos about flash games. How Speedrunners Conquered The World's Hardest Game is by far my fave of his videos because i'm actually familiar with the game, tho i do eventually get around to watching his other videos or at least having them on in the background lol. if you like flash games theres probably a lot more here for you, good stuff none the less. his series on red ball is a true labour of love.

Kosmic is a SMB1 speedrunner and mostly does videos about that game, individual levels, individual tricks, etc. has been doing a series about all the different versions of smb1 like the game boy colour, PAL, all stars, etc. that's pretty good. 4:53 is Almost Possible is the first video in that series and a good start. the man loves super mario bros!

Special Mention: imo this is a must watch video. 160 minutes of video about History of The Hobbit - The Most Underrated Speedrun. this person has never made any other videos like this, he just LOVES the hobbit game and wants to share the speedrunning story. great example of how a game nobody really remembers can have a endlessly interesting history, and all the tricks and glitches, it's just very good. i'd strongly recommend this to anyone who thinks they might like a long-ass video that's a love letter to both the PC and gamecube versions of the game and speedrunning in general. one of my all time favourite videos.

This is an update post for the Victoria 3 campaign, which actually started a few days ago. We're continuing this game soon and anyone is free to join here >>> https://discord.gg/zzxpBRaT

We only played for six years after 1836, but the world already looks different. Holstein is now Prussian and Schleswig is independent. The Russians and the Austrians teamed up to invade and further destabilize the Ottomans. As a result, slavery was ended and Bosnia Herzegovina was ceded to the Habsburgs.

Also, Iraq.

Other than that, most everything is untouched. Except for France, who had a civil war in which the republicans seized power. France, the US, Spain, Mexico, China and some more are still available.

These little guys are the best crewmates possible in FTL. Not only do they not need oxygen making it safe to repair breaches, but they DRAIN oxygen from the room they're in, meaning fire is virtually powerless against them, and any enemies that decide to fight them will most likely suffocate to death in the process, making their combat viability comparable to a mantis.

By far my favorite crewmates in vanilla.
