In the past I would just point my download location to one of my unraid shares via IDM which works fine when I'm hardwired however my wifi speed is not gigabit and slows down my process quite a bit.

Is there any download manager that I can use elsewhere on the network to set up a download leveraging the full bandwidth of the wired server?

For more context: This is going from a Direct download link to Real-Debrid to Unraid.

Amazon has some WD Enterprise Drives on for $69 Canadian Ruples. Wondering what the general consensus is on drives like this? Ive always used the WD Red's in my server but wondering about something thats a bit more cost effective.

I'm gearing up for my first Unraid build, and I'd like to get your input. Here's the link to the parts list I've compiled:

(the NIC I've added is a possiblity as I would like to wire my main PC and the NAS directly for better transfer speeds)

Primarily, I'll be using this setup for:

File Storage and Sharing- The HDD are the main storage and then a SSD for cache, going to run with 1 parity for the time being

Jellyfin Media Server, I'd like to sort out at some point sharing a media service to my friends and family and I've chosen the CPU mainly for the ability of great quicksync transcoding

Arr Services: Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Bazarr and maybe other services with torrenting.

Minecraft Server: I want to host a server for my friends and me.

Docker Containers: stuff I'd like to look at is pi-hole etc, but that may go better with a homelab router when I have the chance.

Potential VMs of the sort

I'd really appreciate inputs on whether the components I've chosen are suitable for these tasks and if there are any compatibility issues

Cheers

I am running Unraid 6.12.3, and I'm having an issue where file access on an SMB share is causing the disks to spin-up in the array when they shouldn't. It is happening with multiple shares, but I included an example in the screenshots. The share is set to use the cache first, then move to array. But when I access it via SMB on another windows computer, it will work, but it spins up the disks when filed in the share are edited.

I cannot figure out why the disks are being spun up here. When I check the files on the disk itself, they are not modified. It still contains the old version, as mover has not yet been run. The modification is present in the cache drive as expected.

Share Settings

File activity plugin output, where a test file was edited (moved directory within the share)

Syslog output, showing that immediately the disks were spun up, and SMART read initiated

Configuration of the array, with disk2 and parity drive spun up after the file edit for

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the disk are being spun up? So far this is negating a lot of power reduction I am trying to accomplish by spinning down disks. This happens for other shares as well, including, very annoyingly, my backup share where I have windows file history backups. This means that almost when I do anything on my desktop, it will inevitably spin up the relevant disk and parity disk.

UnRAID newbie here, currently building their first machine. I am in the process of finally moving my data and media from an old Windows PC to a new unRAID server. With Windows I had the great option of using Backblaze's private plan to backup an unlimited amount of data for just 8€ per month.

I currently have ~ 15 TB of data and media files that I would like to backup to a cloud server (I do not have the option of having enough storage space myself nor do I have that space available at a friend's house. At least for now).

I have been looking into using Duplicati but get confused with the different rate models of Backblaze, AWS, Google, etc. With me not expecting to generate much traffic as this is intended for storage only what would be the most cost efficient but also fairly simple and straightforward to use for a newbie?

Hi, I'm planning to build a home server for a backup of my photos and some miscellaneous files.

And I chose unRAID instead of Truenas since it looked easier.

I'm trying to run unRAID on my old Dell Inspiron which has i5-4590, 8GB DDR3. I think I would have to upgrade if I want to host media and run Plex on it, but it should be good for now.

I'm planning to buy 2 Manufacturer recertified Seagate Exo X16 14TB drives from Serverpartdeals.com. And use 1 for storage and 1 for parity.

Any suggestions before I start making purchases? Do they consume much electricity and make much noise as some on internet have described? Are there some factors I have to consider before building an unRAID server? Any help is much appreciated!

I'm considering rebuilding my server. Currently I just have 2x SSD cache pool (RAID 1) that contains appdata, domains, isos, and system shares. And an array of HDDs where everything else goes. My Plex transcodes just go to /mnt/cache/appdata/binhex-plex/tmp and my media share (torrents, libraries) goes straight to Array. It doesn't touch the cache since I know mover won't work if the file is in use. My Plex server is mostly 1080p but definitely a lot of 4K HDR/DV content that does get transcoded sometimes. I have a good number of users but peak times can be 3-5 simultaneous streams that are a mix of transcode and direct play.

My assumption is if I have dual Gen 4x4 NVMe for my cache pool, that would be plenty of speed to keep the same setup as above? Or more nuanced:

Plex transcodes

I keep hearing about people transcoding to RAM, but every time I've done this it fills up my RAM and causes my entire server to crash. It seems like it doesn't dump the files until the stream is done, so transcoding a single 4K movie stream will eventually fill up my RAM before the movie is over. I only have 16 GB of RAM (7 GB free) but still would concern me that if enough 4K transcodes happen, my server will crash. Is something setup incorrectly or would I just need 64 GB+ of RAM to be safe?

I've also heard of people putting transcodes on a dedicated drive separate from appdata. How necessary is that, even?

Plex appdata

I've heard of people putting specifically Plex's appdata on a separate NVMe because when someone browses Plex, there's a lot of random reads to load posters and information so dedicating a drive to it means no other process can get in the way. Plus good latency with an NVMe helps. But how necessary is this? Would having all my appdata on a single NVMe pool be just fine?

As far as latency, I'd be surprised if SSD -> NVMe would really increase perceived Plex poster load latency versus if the end user is using WiFi or is physically far from the server. Does it really help?

Torrents

Also heard of putting torrents somewhere else because seeding causes a lot of random reads. I've always kept my torrents and libraries folder in the same media share because this makes sonarr/radarr imports instant. If I put them on a different share, it does a slow copy of the file (and I'm not sure if hardlinks would still work?). Storage has gotten pretty cheap though so I do wonder if a big 2-4 TB SSD/NVMe as a "seedbox" would be ideal.

How necessary is this one? Does random reads on an HDD array really affect it? I do have ~3.4k torrents at the moment, but typically only 1-4 actively seeding at any time.

In conclusion

I've always seen Unraid as a very "set it and forget it" solution. I've never considered messing around with how it uses storage. For example, I've also heard of people putting important files on a dedicated encrypted HDD, but I always thought you want files to be as spread out as possible for drive failure safety.

Overall it seems like these ideas boil down to: Cold storage/sequential writes and reads (backup, torrent downloads, file cache, Plex media), Random writes (Plex transcodes), Random reads (appdata, Plex appdata, torrent seeding). And most server sequential writes/reads are slow enough that HDDs perform just fine.

I've even thought of separating my server in two: a personal cold storage server (very import files, dual parity, prioritizing stuff like ECC RAM) and a Plex media server (exclusively torrents, *arrs, Plex, Tautulli, etc.) But that always sounded excessive. Anyone do this?

Any tips or insight is appreciated!

I haven't made the jump to 6.12.x yet and currently running 6.11.5. I was aware of the bugs of the early 6.12 versions and wondering how the newer versions of 6.12.x are.

Worth the upgrade to 6.12.4?

Just noticed my latest Seagate Exos X16 drive is making a clunking/grinding type noise while someone reads/watches a movie on Plex that is stored on there. I bought it as an Official Seagate Recertified less than a month ago, and have the opportunity to claim within Warranty for a brand new replacement if the drive is faulty, but I'm not 100% sure if this noise indicates the drive isn't healthy. SMART Results are fine. Dropbox Noise Recording

Appreciate any insight

Hello there... I'm using unRAID for the lasts 4 months on my hp proliant 7th gen with 16gb of ram, it is a server for storage with no much power, is it basically a home storage of photos, docs, jellyfin for 1 client at time, and I had an home assistant VM running on it with no problem at time.

I want to be able to run more vms on it, for my work I need to use two different installations of windows 11 and run delphi on each one. I know unRaid is not an dedicated hypervisor, but is more easy do these way for my files on the server than do passthrough on the disk on a proxmox installation..

I'm thinking about these chinese x99 motherboards with dual xeon and 64gb of ram, the price is fine, I will get a lot of cores to vms, I will not play games on it, just some office stuffs and delphi for programming, is it a good option or a better idea is get some recent hardware like an i7 or some ryzen?

Pd: I not worried about wait to compile, on my laptop with an i7 1260p and 64gb of ram it take about 5 minutes or more to compile, but I understand that is not a hardware problem, but a software legacy probmem, the delphi versión that i'm stuck is just 32bits and had some issues anyway.

I'm running into the weirdest of situations. Despite not doing anything with my server, my Plex docker container has stopped working. Running fine on Saturday, but by Monday no users can see my server and I can't load up webgui from the docker container either. I'm using the binhex repository which I have been using for years since I set up my unraid server

I tried stopping and restarting the container, I upgraded to 6.12.4 because I figured what could it hurt. Every other docker container is working fine, even my ubiquiti controller that is also running on the host network (which was my first thought about what has gone wrong since most everything else is on br0 or bridge).

I don't even know where to start troubleshooting here. so uh... any good ideas?

Hello,

I am looking for an ATX Z690 or Z790 mainboard. Currently i am looking at the Asrock Z790 Pro RS/D4 (due to 8 SATA ports) or the Gigabyte Z690 Gaming.

CPU will be a i5 13500.

Is DDR5 speed difference noticeable compared to DDR4? If not id rather stick to a DDR4 board. Also I want to optimize the system to reduce energy consumption to a minimum. Hence, I want to rely on the build in SATA Ports if possible to reach deep sleep states.

Currently, I am using 2 4 TB WD Red 5400 rpms and 2 16 TB Toshiba MG08 drives. I am planing to extend the HDDs with two additional Toshiba Drives in the near future.

Which Mainboard would you recommend?

EDIT: PSU is going to be a Seasonic Focus PX 650W. In this test it reached 94% efficiency at 154 watt load. I hope i will see some similar efficiency in a even lower wattage area. Does anybody have any experiences with that PSU?

Hello Community,

I am planning to build a Unraid server and need advice and recommendations as I intend to run multiple virtual machines (VMs) on my server. My main goal is to create a powerful not too expensive NAS server for storing photos and videos, but at the same time I want to run multiple VMs for different purposes. In addition to virtualization, I plan to use Nextcloud and Docker containers on the same server.

I am looking for advice on hardware selection(preferably I think Intel would be suitable for me), configuration recommendations for Unraid with regards to virtualization, and tips on how to best use Nextcloud, Docker and VMs on the same server. Stability and performance are critical to me.

Any tips or advice you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your support and advice!

Greetings Nico

Hello,

I’m new to unRaid so this might be a bit of a noob question.

Can I just upgrade my motherboard and cpu?

I tried unRaid on an old FX system but now I want/need more that that motherboard can offer so I bought an ASUS P10S-M Motherboard with an Pentium from EBay.

I used SATA drives for testing, so I don’t need to move an HBO.

Edit: UnRaid started with no problem whatsoever under the new hardware.

I just wanted to be sure that it doesn’t cause problems before I create an easy avoidable error.

Thank you all for for your kind help and patience for beginners.

I just purchased the pro key, but unraid still shows that it's trial and going to expire in 4 days, does anyone know if this is just a bit of a bug in the UI not showing? I log into the unraid connect site and it shows my USB is licensed, so its like my server is picking up that it's registered for the trial still?

I've seen a similar thing happen with Microsoft PowerBI trial at work, and once the trial ended the license kicked in.

Hey all,

I am evaluating Unraid for my home server. Currently I am on Ubuntu on bare metal, 2 RAID5 arrays for a total of around 15TBs, main use is personal storage and Plex server (with pass), .arr apps and nothing else. It will be not 24/7 as at the moment I am the only user (upload bandwidth make sharing my plex pointless) and I like to save electricity if not in use (nights), but can be in the future if fiber comes to my home and I open up my plex to friends.

I am lurking around for a while this sub as I find extremely convenient the possibility of Unraid of expanding the storage using different drives. When I upgraded the capacity one of my arrays RAID5 was hell and I would like to have a more flexible way to do it. Also, setting up ubuntu is quite time consuming, and when every new LTS is out, when you upgrade from the old LTS, 100% something will be screwed up, and you have to fix it.

I have tried Unraid using a trial and a spare NAS with a couple of old disks, one as array and one as cache, and everything seems awesome. Really impressed on it: simple, clear, inbuilt containers and VMs, cool. And also a very cool community around it for help.

Although I see that the main concern in this community is the update process of the system. A lot of people are afraid to update due to possible bugs, hiccups, mainteinance, and for some people it really happened: arrays not starting, containers broken, etc etc. So extra maintenance might be needed.

How is the general feeling about Unraid reliability as a system? Is it different from other systems (for example, I never had any issues with upgrading ubuntu within the same LTS, so to update the OS for me is a no brainer task) or the risk is higher?

Thanks!

I googled. I found other reddit threads, and got lucky and tried something from a 6 year old closed thread.

Hoping this saves someone the far too long I spent searching.

When I set up the Plex-Media-Server Docker, Key 4 "version" was set to latest.

Once I went back into Update Container and set Key 4 to "plexpass" and applied, the docker restarted and finally updated automatically.

t had not updated since install 6 months ago and was getting pretty out of date. I'm glad it was simple.

Hope this helps!

I have a 3-drive system, 2 x 10TB for data and 12TB parity (plus cache drive). The parity build is incredibly slow, currently 209KB/sec and dropping. Estimated finish in 616 days.

Surely Unraid has to be quicker than this. Currently this is a trial license but I can’t justify spending money if this is what I’m going to get.

Ideas and suggestions more than welcome.

I still feel like a neophyte when it comes to unRaid even after the last 3-4 months. Recently I had an issue where one of my pool drives became corrupted and after swapping out I realized I had to redo all my prior configurations/apps/vm's/etc.

Question 1:

What is the best configuration for when just a single drive dies. Right now I just have two 1tb pool drives configured to just 1tb. I also have a single 10tb array drive with a 12tb parity drive. How can I config this so basically if any single drive ever goes down it will then just use the other drive so I can swap the bad drive out and I am rolling again.

Question 2:

What is a good backup strategy for complete system malfunction (cpu dies, multiple drive failures, catches on fire, etc). So basically if the system ever goes south I will still at least have the data so I can start over again.
