Just wanted to share a thread for those who don't regularly venture out of the bear site. Can't cross-post since it's defederated. It's small but has some numbers about community counts, active users, etc and links to more info from https://lemmyverse.net/. Thought it was notable that Hexbear shows up no matter how you sort it.

OP image is community count sorted by active users in the last month.

Edit: sorted by comments

They openly state that their primarily goals in federation is to be obnoxious trolls, and boy howdy do they put a lot of energy into it. They are first and foremost, just obnoxious. It's like 20% teenagers going through their edgy anti establishment phase, and then the rest are right wing, Russian, and Chinese trolls playing soggy waffle with each other. They pretend to be super serious about LGBT issues but then simp for Hamas, Iran and Russia. And one of their tankie leaders just got caught calling trans issues "western pink washing."

It's just a mess. It's probably a bit overblown, but the community is legitimately annoying if nothing else.

I'm comfortable assuming this is bullshit, but is it a malformed reference to an actual event that happened?

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Malformed. I'm pretty sure this was a lemmy.ml mod, not hexbear or lemmygrad.

If its neutonic then they are basically blaming Hexbear for only temp banning him. Assuming they are even aware that happened?

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago

Who knows if they're aware shrug-outta-hecks They're looking for any reason to whinge about hexbears

If I may use my decoding ability that I gained from years of listening to people tell their wildly distorted sides of a story for sympathy, here's what I think happened:

Hexbear points out rainbow imperialism, critiques how western empire uses queer people and their rights as a rhetorical battering ram to justify invasions and coups (and now a full-on extermination of Palestinians)

Dipshit sees this and either genuinely or deliberately misintereprets it as "LGBT people are a sinister capitalist plot" or something, heroically and liberally laying claim to "all LGBT issues" and deciding that we all must be secretly bigoted and view queerness as bourgeois decadence, just like how our rejection of cynical liberal identity politics (why won't spoiled children listen to genocidal coconut mommy?) means we're racist.

It's one of the Lemmy core developers, and therefore a ml mod. But all Lemmy instances are using their code and hexbear the only place I know of (outside ml) that has been pretty actively asked for them to be removed.
