Fire Emblem, Trans Mentioned 🏳️⚧️
-- Forrest in a support conversation with Corrin (the avatar character)
This is the same game that doesn't allow for homosexual marriage unless it's a Corrinsexual, has gender-locked classes (including for this character, he has to wear masc clothes for certain classes), and has ZERO characters outside of the gender binary. The only gender-diverse representation in this game (Fire Emblem: Fates) is the character speaking the quote above, Forrest, a boy who's non-conforming in his gender presentation. What's cool about Forrest, though, is that he breaks the gender-lock on one of the specific classes that used to be locked to women (Troubadour, essentially a cleric on a horse). As I said above though, fuck him if he wants to be the butler/maid class, he has to experience dysphoria as a butler.
Doing some research on trans characters in Fire Emblem, and somehow one of the best examples comes from the disaster for the human race that was Fire Emblem: Fates. I can only think of one other decent example in the official series, Intelligent Systems needs to step up their game.
Also unfortunately the game with the
cw: homophobia
Magical conversion therapy potion being used on the all but explicitly lesbian character who also cannot date a single woman.Meanwhile the two actual bi characters are a stalker and a pervert. And picking them is detrimental to gameplay.
But yeah Forrest is a nicer take compared to a lot of the others in the series which are negative stereotypes, agender non-humans, or Rosado's "I just want to be cute." (Not saying that's not a valid reason, it genuinely was one for me, but for actual trans rep it's not great compared to Forrest.) ((Also ngl I do like some of the agender non-humans, Limstella is pretty and so gender to me sorry not sorry))
homophobia
Of course something like this would be in Fates The series definitely struggles with an absurd amount of negative stereotypes. I haven't really played the 3DS games other than SoV, and didn't notice some of the others in the GBA games, but it was really disappointing to see just how many there are. Hopefully things will improve over time, but the good seems absolutely random with no pattern of improvement.
Also agree on Limstella, I just found out they were agender a couple of days ago.
edit: Want to play Fates to experience Forrest, but I don't know if I can deal with all of the other B.S. that game brings. Also would have to play Conquest, which means I have to deal with Camilla, while also killing and losing the Hoshidans, whose character designs I actually somewhat enjoy compared to the Nohr characters.
Yeah FE, much as I love it, isn't great in regards to stereotypes on the whole. The improvements are semi-random because the games tend to have different writers. Weirdly Heroes of all things seems to be the most consistent on making things more clearly queer, but Heroes has plenty of its own issues as well.
Fates Conquest is one of the most pure fun FE games, but it is also a mess of a story. Forrest is a super minor character anyways, being just Leo's child, so you won't miss anything by just reading the supports online. Especially since Fates iirc has all of its supports on youtube if you want the expressions too.
Maybe it's worth playing Conquest, just to experience the fun. The 3DS aesthetic has been growing on me, and for some reason Awakening seems so boring to me. You also make a good point about supports on YouTube, might be the way to see what I want to while avoiding what I don't want.
