Heard of the movies they've made for more international audiences like The Battle at Lake Changjing, but nothing more

I've been repping Long Day's Journey into Night (arthouse movie, it's very abstract and dreamlike so it's an absolute trip) here but there's a few more I've seen that are also good:

Ip Man is amazing, definitely one of the best martial arts movies just for the fights but it has a very strong core narrative about the Japanese occupation.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a classic Wuxia movie. Super fun, it has Michelle Yeoh who's good in everything she's in. Once again a movie that's known for its fights and the flashy setpieces but it has a great narrative and characters with a lot of soul.

The Wandering Earth trilogy (3 is in production currently) is amazing, it's like they took the acceptable parts of Hollywood action slop, but took away all the rot. They're wholesome movies about saving the world that have no winking to the camera, no cameos and fourth wall breaks for the sake of keeping the audience engaged, nothing like that. They're good.

Some other movies from Hong Kong that are good:

  • Infernal Affairs
  • Chunking Express
  • In the Mood for Love

And final special mention for Yi Yi, which is a Taiwanese movie about life not quite going to plan but still being wonderful. It's very melancholy. Highly recommend if you're a fan of Greta Gerwig or Baumbach.
