Heard of the movies they've made for more international audiences like The Battle at Lake Changjing, but nothing more

Yolo was pretty cute.

The Hidden Blade was really good.

Wandering Earth series is awesome. Fuck you, Jupiter!

As young pup I was all about Stephen Chow films; Kung Fu Hustle Shaolin Soccer, and a bunch of other less popular ones.

The Jet Li movies Fearless and Hero were a major staple of my 20's as well.

The Pirates series was pretty enjoyable. I think one of them was on Netflix.

Journey to the West (2023) was interesting.

Railroad Tigers, cheesy but fun.

I'm curious about Successor but haven't found a copy yet.

I love Kung Fu Hustle. I'm sure it's parodying a bunch of other movies i haven't seen too, but I still love it (except Looney Tunes, I've obviously seen those).

Shaolin Soccer is an incredible movie

Agreed. I need some hard drive space so I can download them all and have a marathon some time.

In the Mood for Love is very good

I've been repping Long Day's Journey into Night (arthouse movie, it's very abstract and dreamlike so it's an absolute trip) here but there's a few more I've seen that are also good:

Ip Man is amazing, definitely one of the best martial arts movies just for the fights but it has a very strong core narrative about the Japanese occupation.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a classic Wuxia movie. Super fun, it has Michelle Yeoh who's good in everything she's in. Once again a movie that's known for its fights and the flashy setpieces but it has a great narrative and characters with a lot of soul.

The Wandering Earth trilogy (3 is in production currently) is amazing, it's like they took the acceptable parts of Hollywood action slop, but took away all the rot. They're wholesome movies about saving the world that have no winking to the camera, no cameos and fourth wall breaks for the sake of keeping the audience engaged, nothing like that. They're good.

Some other movies from Hong Kong that are good:

  • Infernal Affairs
  • Chunking Express
  • In the Mood for Love

And final special mention for Yi Yi, which is a Taiwanese movie about life not quite going to plan but still being wonderful. It's very melancholy. Highly recommend if you're a fan of Greta Gerwig or Baumbach.

A lot of people have recommended Hong Kong flicks but I would really recommend checking out some stuff from the mainland it's very different.

One of the great Chinese directors is Jia Zhangke. All his stuff is interesting but my faves are A Touch of Sin (2013) but any deeper cut that is really interesting is I Wish I Knew (2014), and oral history of Shanghai across the 20th century. Extremely interesting he gets all these interesting seniors from completely different backgrounds and just lets them each tell a story about their experience about their gangster father who fled to HK after the revolution, or a film censor who was tasked with monitoring the first Euro documentary in China, a woman who describes her freedom after the revolution to be romantic forlove as opposed to a financial obligation...civil war, Cultural Revolution, so much craziness happened in that century it's a really interesting watch and he's such a great director he cuts it all together with really interesting footage of everyday life in modern Shanghai.

Ip Man 1 is great for the story and good Kung Fu. Ip Man 2 has a cheesier story but even better fights (imo). The following two sequels are incredibly cheesy, with just fine fight scenes.

That's all I got, I don't watch a lot of movies lmao.

!noyank@lemmy.ml might be able to help. It's a pretty good follow anyway.

Edit: someone literally just posted this there: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21148018/
