Tomorrow is Pancake Tuesday which means the following day is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. Every year I give up sugar but it's not really much of a challenge because i don't eat that much of it so this year I've decided I'm giving up bread as well. (I love it, but it hates me).

So if there is something you'd like to give up, feel free to join me. You can do it for a week and see how you go or continue for the 40 + days. It's up to you.

Had Lent forced upon me until 15-16 by parents. Heavy guilt trips and Catholic doom always hanging over my head through out my formative years took a long time to undo. Ain't going through this shit again, even voluntarily.

I'll always support people who try it, as long as it's guilt free and for a good cause.

In this case I recommend you either give up Lent and/or religion.

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago

Already did. Maybe I should give up, giving it up and go back full circle 😁

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Oh no. It's not proper lent. It's like Christmas without the religious shit.

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Oh I get it, I just have some deep bad memories of 'Lent' as a kid and all thing associated with it. So many years on and still trying to completely sever the connection.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

That's terrible.

My husband fasted until he was about 14. Then he discovered bacon, hotdogs and weed. It was all over but he continued pretending to fast up until he was an adult.

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago

Good approach by him. My mum found out I smoked cigs like a week before my wedding. She was shocked. My dad was laughing cause he knew I was hiding it from them.

bacon, hotdogs and weed

All the best things in life

[–] dumblederp@aussie.zone 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've been taking a break from booze, weed and porn this year to see how much of a hold they might've had on my life. Aside from a week's shit sleep with the weed, the impact seems minimal. I was smoking a lot of weed. Booze and porn were already somewhat take it or leave it. I'll kick on for the rest of the month because that was the plan - three months - but since it doesn't seem an issue I guess nine months of middle age hedonism here I come.

That's more like a confession. 3 hail marys and be on your way.

Oooo. That's gonna be hard to get out of the keyboard.

I’m trying to stop doomscrolling and also trying to reduce negative social media.

It’s been really hard trying to replace it with other hobbies due to multiple barriers but all I can do is try to reduce

  • go to GOG.com
  • Download Dungeon Keeper (original), Factorio or Theme Hospital
  • Lose all your SM time in other means.
[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Dungeon Keeper

What a blast from the past.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago

if you're a fan, you should check out keeperFX.

how's 60-odd new levels and campaigns on the original engine sound with a long weekend coming up.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago

I don't think it's free anywhere

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Factorio

And lose my sanity! If it’s anything like Dwarf Fortress. I’m not good at time management games.

I used to download old game isos for emulators but didn’t find they worked very well and am wary about downloads now.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago

not a time management, but a resource builder.

GOG actually includes their own wrappers that will just run in the OS, been using them for years now. Haven't had a single issue.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah doomscrolling is not worth your time or the little bit of sanity you have left. I like to play games like cribbage, 500, chess, backgammon, mahjong. The world is your oyster these days.

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I used to enjoy Solitaire until Microsoft stuffed it with ads, levels, pop ups for premium and sound effects that turn themselves back on if muted. They made a basic game unplayable… do I have to buy a pack of physical cards? lol.

(Actually they are cheap… but impractical on bed days and the cat would sit on or eat them.)

I played Minecraft single player but it gets depressing and boring after a while

[–] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

For solitaire, try this one - https://worldofsolitaire.com/ - ads easily blocked and it's free. I've never had any trouble muting sound or choosing other options/settings. Has easy versions and difficult versions of most of the games.

[–] Duenan@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago

Used to follow it very loosely, I remember getting ashes on my forehead every year but I fell away from it all after I grew older.

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's odd. I grew up with a devout mother and I went to church at least once a week up to when I became a teen

we just didn't do Lent , Easter wasn't big at our house either, Christmas was. ( traditional Huguenot )

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago

We eat tuna casserole and stuff our faces with hot cross buns at mums house every Good Friday. That's as religious as we get.

[–] Force_majeure123@aussie.zone 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I will give up spinach for the week. Edit: AND I will give up 90% and above cocoa chocolate
