Not to be that guy, but McDonalds doesn't really give a shit if you eat at their restaurant. They own the land that the restaurant sits on. It's only the franchisee that gets in financial trouble from lost revenue.

McDonalds can always sell the land even if individual restaurants fail.

But the net on that is nothing. The profits on the land sale is everything, as long as they can hold it long enough (rented) to make it worthwhile.
