They seem like they'd be great pets, if it wasn't for their unusually short life span of around 4 years as pets (according to wikipedia), and only 1-2 years in the wild.
But opossums are still very cute.

God meant for opossums to be pets and just wanted humans to do some selective breeding to increase their lifespans.

Humans decided their fur was too soft and they looked too much like rats. Obviously the only course of action was to kill them.

Rats are also great pets! And also have all of the same downsides as opossums. :(

At least you can have a pet rat and there are plenty of guides on what to feed them.
