A community for Cartographers with nothing left to lose.
Rules:
Don’t be awful Lemmy Guidelines Still Apply.
We are agents of chaos I’ve created this to be the alternative to the community I used to manage on the website that shalt not be named “mapporncirclejerk”
Live and let die Meme trends happen, so please don’t message mods asking to take down maps that are repetitive to a bit.
Reposts Vs. Covers Not all reposts are evil- if someone posts something that has been done years ago, it serves to bring old memes to the new users. I call these meme covers. However it can be done in excess which makes it a repost and spam. Mods will determine if a post is a cover or a repost.
No impersonating mods I can’t believe I had to make this rule.
No harassing mods on an appeal We can talk it out, and we will be acting in good faith when making decisions. If you disagree with a removal, you are free to message for clarification or to appeal by giving some added context.
Bans Bans will be set to a maximum of 365 days for humans, and a minimum of 365 years for bots. I believe people can change, so if you are banned for good reason, do know that it is not permanent, it is just a way to say “take time to grow and come back when you are ready”.

European here, is pike's peak high?
Alaska has the ten tallest US mountains, with Denali being the most spectacular at 6141 m prominence.
The lower 48 states don’t come anywhere near the majesty of Alaska’s mountains, but they have their little spots of local pride. Pike’s Peak was hailed as a huge mountain during western exploration, with a prominence of 1686 m.
This map is taking the piss.
Mauna Kea at 9330m prominence being absolutely disrespected by you landlubbers
Ftfy.
Denali is about a third taller. Stop making shit up.
What an interesting reaction to facts. I’m assuming you’re a USer, so I’ll break it down for you in freedom bits:
There is a difference between elevation and prominence.
Denali is 20,310 feet in elevation and 20,146 feet in prominence.
Pike’s Peak is 14,115 feet in elevation and 5530 feet in prominence. (5530 feet = 1,685.544 meters.) This difference in prominence makes Denali appear to rise up to nearly four times the height of PP.

~~As someone from outside US I prefer the metric answer though~~
Excuse my ignorance, I looked it up because I got confused: "an altitude of 14,115 feet above sea level" is basically 4,300m so yeah
No, it's not particularly high, even compared to all the other mountains in Colorado. What makes it famous is that it stands alone, while the other mountains in the state are all in a mountain range. So it is pretty striking.
It's not a peak mountain but it is a mountain peak.
Don't like being that guy, but man that's an incredibly easy thing to look up.
Some people like engaging with the community, rather than just looking something up.
Ok. For those people, yes it's high.
you're being kind of a dick, dude
I know and from time to time I do, but I also know there is very likely someone here who can give context without it being any effort and since there probably is other people who don't know anything about Pike's peak the answers aren't only for my eyes anyway. If this was a dead topic with nobody browsing these comments or if there was some kind of urgency I'd have chosen another way of getting an answer. Do you care about this long reply? Probably not.
