I think we've learned its not so much about immigration/citizenship status, as it is so much about the skin hue.

Not really, Germans, Australian and French still got detained, and they were white as snow.

Those were just a few cases at the border, or did I miss cases of White people being picked up in big quantities at courts?

We learned that lesson 95 years ago when the same thing happened during the Great Depression. And then apparently many of us forgot it and I hope many of those people are relearning it.
