Note: I'm too lazy to google to confirm the validity of this Reddit quote. I am anyway.

The eye clamps were used prior for delicate eye surgeries. They are only supposed to be used on patients that are lying down, but Kubrick insisted that McDowell be sitting up slightly, which in turn caused him excruciating pain and the tearing of one of his corneas.
