I have been more than 2 years on Lemmy and I have had an amazing experience with everything, but lately I see more and more US politics on all! I also see new communities regarding US politics + newspapers about the US, cross-posting same article in multiple communities and so on.

It's only me who thinks this is too much? Anyone else that have noticed it?

I tend to block every community with American news and it’s what I spend 90% of my time doing on here.

Hey, did you know your account is set to appear as a bot and many may be filtering out your posts/comments as a result? You can change this in your Lemmy profile settings.

Ooo, thank you for telling me this. Can I ask in what way? I’ve just made some changes but feedback would be useful for me as a new user. Thank you!

Using a blacklist approach seems to be very popular, but here's an alternative for those who want to try something different.

Subscribe to all the communities you consider worth your time. Change the setting of your default feed so that home=subscribed. When you're just casually browsing, you'll see posts from the communities you've explicitly approved, so you can be pretty sure that you won't be seeing stuff you don't want to be exposed to.

If you want to discover new and interesting places, there are actually a few communities specifically for that purpose. (!newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca) Just subscribe to those, and your home feed will introduce you to new things from time to time. If you want to see shitposts, politics, memes or a combination of all three, you can always visit the "all" feed.

Sorry to ask but I have changed my settings to show ‘top in the last hour’ but this never translates when I close and open Lemmy again, it’s just back to All Active. Is there a step that I am missing? Thank you for your help kind stranger

Username (top right corner), settings, scroll down... Keep on going... There! Sort type: top hour.

If you're using a mobile client, it's also somewhere in the settings. Probably buried deep.

The only solution that I'm about to do!

I've blocked so many communities that my all feed is finally starting to clear up recently

[–] FrenchFoodInHand@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How long did this take you? Also do you find that you have to repeatedly block the same communities? There is certain communities that shows up every day and gets blocked every day, and the next day they’re back

How long did this take you?

It took me a whhhhile my best advice, is to make All/new your home feed, and block Aggressively ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, you don't want to see, even if it's not politics. Block block block block. I make it a habit to check lemmy every morning and block every single community i do not want that's shown up in the current day. I keep blocking until I hit posts from the previous day where I've already gone through and did my blocking. Do that every day, be consistent, and you'll see it start to clear up.

Also do you find that you have to repeatedly block the same communities?

YES My god it's annoying too. The thing is, I think the ppl who make those communities, make a bunch of them on several instances bc they know no one wants to see it and they aren't getting engagement. It's their way of shoving it down your throat.

There is certain communities that shows up every day and gets blocked every day, and the next day they’re back

My theory on this, is it's because the same users are deliberately creating more of them on other instances. Just keep blocking and don't stop.

Now, for me, I only get maybe 5 to 7 communities each day I don't want to see and I block them, and it clears up my feed.
