I grew up in the 90's and I remember nobody being okay with creepy 40 year old guys trying to hit on high school girls.

Fucking right? The whole time reading that I was like what goddamned parallel universe did she grow up in?

The rules about age were hazier back in the day but a guy picking up high schoolers after high school has been a loser signifier for a long time. It's a pop culture thing It's such a prevalent sentiment. It happens of course but it's not socially celebrated. No television sitcom in the last 50 years would have a teenage girl start dating an older man and have it not be part of a "Very Special Episode" about predation or drugs or just listening to your parents.

It's still such a common trope it hurts too. Losers going to high school football games to prey on literal children. Or they meet them at their jobs.

Now they supply their underaged girlfriends weed and xanax or oxycodone.

Bottom of the barrel human beings

My sister was in her teens in the 90s and I remember my dad threatening dudes with prison if he ever saw them near her again. It definitely was NOT a normal and ok thing back then.

TBF “Seventeen” was a hit song in the very late 80’s. Not that I’m arguing that it was okay, but there was a skeevy undercurrent to American culture in that era.

"Classic rock" as a general category is so fucking rotten, there's a shocking amount of creeper shit. Also this top comment on the video:

Winger's crafty writing is ridiculously underrated.

"rhyming about being horny for a child is so genius!!" bear-despair

[–] space_comrade@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

"Fun" fact: David Bowie, Jimmy Page and Mick Jagger all had sex with the same teenage girl.

Holy fucking shit the comments on that video libertarian-alert

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

Given the vintage of the song and the demographics of current politics, you know there’s gotta be a significant overlap between the people who think everyone makes too big a deal over grown men singing about lusting over minors, and people who get frothy over “grooming.”

Lest we forget "Christine Sixteen" by Kiss...

Gene Simmons totally seems like the type that would hit on teenagers well into his 50’s

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
