Where are you from? That's crazy, taking an hour break doesn't somehow undo an hour of work that you've done and should be paid for.

It doesn't subtract, they're still clocked in on lunch time. Still shitty, but not as much

No, the half hour break is mandatory by law and therefore not really subtracted from time worked
