The text in the german flag area translates to

u/spez is a son of a removed

[–] Vlyn@lemmy.ml 44 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (7 children)

You can swear on the internet. Violence? Gore? No problem!

A bad word? Son of a removed, we're all going to die.

Edit: Wtf, there is a swear filter? Fuck.

[–] QuinceDaPence@kbin.social 34 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

What pearl clutching son of a bitch at lemmy.ml decided its users were too fragile to hear the word "bitch"? And here's the real question, can you read ot or does it censor mine? Because if you can read it then what's the point of censoring your own users?

Edit: yeah Kbin lets you say it.

[–] flicker@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

@QuinceDaPence

@B3_CHAD @CAPSLOCKFTW @Vlyn

If the swear is posted on kbin, and viewed on kbin, it is not censored. Which is why I can view 'bitch' when posted by kbin folks. And I assume they can read mine.

[–] Vlyn@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Nobody can read it, check the source of your comment. The word gets immediately replaced when you post. I'd like to know what words are forbidden, is there a list somewhere?

Just to test how the filter behaves: Bi.tch.

[–] harmonea@kbin.social 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nobody can read it, check the source of your comment.

Correction: No one browsing through your specific server can read it. The rest of us see it just fine.

From where I'm sitting, it seems like the filter is applied (a) when a lemmy.ml user makes a post (it strips it from the source and says removed for everyone) and (b) when lemmy.ml federates another instance's comment over (source instance and any other non-censored federated instance has the word intact, ONLY you guys don't see it).

Come see!

[–] BartsBigBugBag@lemmy.tf 16 points 1 year ago

I can read every swear in this thread except the root post.

The filter is a text matching regex, and not terribly verbose. Very easy to circumvent

That’s how the Fediverse works. That word is constantly used in inflammatory comments. Don’t like the rules, then leave.

[–] hypelightfly@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, it's not how "the Fediverse works" it's how lemmy.ml works.

[–] galaxies_collide@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I meant how the fediverse works as in each instance can have its own rules and if you don’t like the rules you find a different instance.

[–] oatscoop@midwest.social 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or stay and rightfully criticize the instances that use words filters.

Here's a wild idea: word filters are the most brain-dead way to deal with a problem. They don't understand context -- you can't even use a "bad word" so people understand what you're denouncing. You can't share your experience with being called a removed.

They're also easily bypassed with odd spellings by people that are going to use a "no no word" to be assholes.

[–] bestonecrazy@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 year ago

It works based on instance.

[–] Dekthro@lemm.ee 22 points 1 year ago

Time to switch to a different instance you fucking fuck face!

[–] StealthToad@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Interesting. You can say fuck but son of a bitch is censored… what about son of a fuck?

[–] nailbar@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Might be it doesn't filter edits

[–] StealthToad@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah hadn’t thought of that

Kyle's mom's a bitch...

[–] metaStatic@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

looks like tankies love censorship, who would have guessed

[–] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hmm. Testing to see: removed.

That's crazy, it even blocks my ex wife's name.

[–] argv_minus_one@beehaw.org 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ladies and/or gentlemen, this is a historic moment: the second coming of hunter2.

Is b word not allowed on lemmy.ml?

[–] dingus@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 year ago (2 children)

slurs in general are not allowed on lemmy.ml

[–] gigachad@feddit.de 12 points 1 year ago

Das glaub ich nicht Hurensohn

[–] CallumWells@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Changing it to "removed" instead just drives the euphemism treadmill faster, people will find ways to say the same without those specific words. Whether something is a slur is also very context-dependent. Something computers as of yet aren't well equipped to handle.

[–] DharmaCurious@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Iirc, lemmy.ml is a specifically leftist instance, right? They may have banned the word because of its sexist nature. A bit like allowing fuck, but not allowing the other f word that generally applies to gay men. Swearing isn't the issue, slurs or derogatory terms are.

[–] dtxer@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Small test: Dio porco Cunt Vaffanculo Hurensohn Dickhead

Well how am I supposed to reference a female dog then?

[–] Sabata11792@kbin.social 15 points 1 year ago

I would say /u/spez, but that seems mean to the dog.

[–] klemptor@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

A heccin' G O O D G I R L E, obviously.

[–] CAPSLOCKFTW@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Just fyi, i used the w word because it is the most accurate translation. Hurensohn means Sohn einer Hure, Son einer Hure, Son of a Hure, Son of a removed

[–] oatscoop@midwest.social 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

A lot of translations of "Spez ist ein hurensohn" translates to "Spez is a son on of a bitch" -- although "hurensohn" is more literally "whore's son"

Edit: Seems like it's just your instance (lemmy.ml)

[–] CAPSLOCKFTW@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For anyone who wants to swear in german, just say

who rain zone

But fast

[–] red@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago

I'd say ran is a bit closer than rain, but either way, that's still very English German.

[–] _ak@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

male descendant of a prostitute.

[–] HerrVorragend@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

"Offspring of a harlot"

[–] coffeebiscuit@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

No, it translate to “son of a prostitute”.

[–] dtxer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

What a joke is this the US? For europeans these swear words are fine. u/spez ist ein HÜR3ns0hn
