For the most part they know and don’t care, as long as they can’t enjoy it on a purely aesthetic level. For instance starship troopers. They know it’s a satire, but just say “this but unironically”. But there’s a tipping point. If nazis are being depicted as pants-shitting losers there’s nothing for them to admire on an aesthetic level.
