The anti MAGA made up for a more boring season IMHO. I don't love that the CIA are objectively the good guys now.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 42 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I was pretty suspicious of that as well, but I don't think they're good guys in the show. If I remember properly, the guy ordering MM around is only concerned about the exploding-head lady because she can easily kill anyone that goes against her, without anyone knowing it's her.

[–] QuillcrestFalconer@hexbear.net 21 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Honestly it's bad writing when her power is basically controlling blood, she could kill people by giving them an aneurism / heart attack and no ome would even suspect a thing

[–] MaoTheLawn@hexbear.net 30 points 5 months ago
[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 15 points 5 months ago

Or, to make it funner, maybe there's a reason she can't just give people like that, like due to limitations or something idk.

Theres a moment in the Gen V spin off wheres shes threatening someone in a parking garage, I thought "ah how dangerous, he'll die of something subtle" and then his head burst like a watermelon under a tire.

Hell she could even just give people really bad hypertension and kill them slowly.

[–] regularassbitch@hexbear.net 31 points 5 months ago

i don't think anyone in the show is a good guy. it's all self-interest and revenge, even when they pretend to be moral

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago (3 children)

The show centering on a bunch of CIA goons led by an annoying Australian who epicly swears bacon style made me hate the show after a couple episodes. I finished all 3 seasons anyway but found it all annoying.

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 6 points 5 months ago

Fair enough. They do portray Butcher as the bad good guy enough times.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago

I like the show but I think this is a completely fair assessment that I wouldnt argue with.

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 8 points 5 months ago

Not really. While Mallory and MM are fine, Butcher was absolutely psychotic and Neagley wants to turn Ryan into a weapon so basically Homelander 2.0.

[–] Lawn_and_disorder@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

In the comics they are just an end to means for butcher and the boys. CIA gets shit all over in the comics at least

[–] Comp4@hexbear.net 67 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

Goes to show that if there is any degree of subtlety, chuds won't get that they are being made fun of.

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 26 points 5 months ago (2 children)

For the most part they know and don’t care, as long as they can’t enjoy it on a purely aesthetic level. For instance starship troopers. They know it’s a satire, but just say β€œthis but unironically”. But there’s a tipping point. If nazis are being depicted as pants-shitting losers there’s nothing for them to admire on an aesthetic level.

[–] Futterbinger@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago

The "Springtime for Hitler" argument.

there was a whole twitter discourse where it turned out they dont know starship troopers is satire

[–] archomrade@midwest.social 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I've found the same to be true with libs

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

Yeah I don't think a single lib caught on that Soldier Boy was meant to be brandon last season

[–] an_engel_on_earth@hexbear.net 5 points 5 months ago

wait rly? How tho

Soldier Boy? I thought he was pretty squarely an old timey republican, how is he a lib/biden?

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 43 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Conservatives are the dumbest people alive, it's been doing this since what, Season 2?

[–] space_comrade@hexbear.net 18 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

It's been doing it since episode 1, just not as explicitly.

[–] trashxeos@lemmygrad.ml 35 points 5 months ago

Hahahaha, maximum cope. Love to see it.

[–] Leon_Frotsky@hexbear.net 25 points 5 months ago (1 children)

remember the guy in here who tried to get people to artificially boost the reviews of season 3 bcs that's what'll bring about world communism

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 36 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The guy's name? Karl Marx.

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

Karl Urban Marx

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 23 points 5 months ago (5 children)

Is The Boys cape shit? I’ve not seen it

[–] Sephitard9001@hexbear.net 46 points 5 months ago

Yes it's based on a comic by Garth Ennis. Superheroes become mainstream enough that there's a superhero industry and their brands are managed by a corporation because they're celebrities now instead of vigilantes. Crazy guy with a grudge gets a team together to eradicate the supes because 99% of them are flawed, egotistical maniacs as they're basically groomed from young age like Nickelodeon stars but they're walking WMDs instead. So it's "anti cape-shit" but effectively still ends up being cape shit most of the time because most characters are supes.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 28 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's sorta in the same vein as The Watchmen where it poses the question "what if superheroes were real?" and proceeds to answer "pretty much nothing good and a whole lot of bad." With way more sexual debauchery.

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Don't forget the gratuitous gore! The show effectively cold opens with the in universe "Flash" running through someone and turning them to paste.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

I honestly laughed my ass off when

(Plot spoilers)

spoilerthe Scientology guy got owned after cracking a Fresca. I did not see that coming.

[–] Grebgreb@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's capeshit insofar that it has superheroes and sometimes they fight with lasers. It is not at all like actual capeshit I think, the last Marvel movie I actually saw was Ironman.

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 17 points 5 months ago

Yeah, there's no Josh Wedon/Disney bullshit here

[–] nat_turner_overdrive@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It is the rare capeshit that criticizes capeshit enough that non capeshit likers such as myself can enjoy it

[–] worlds_okayest_mech_pilot@hexbear.net 27 points 5 months ago (2 children)

As much as I enjoy The Boys, I actually hope it comes to a good conclusion soon. Because I feel like there's a line between capeshit critique and regular capeshit, and that line is somewhere around when we get to season 11 of "anti-capeshit" promising "the most bombastic superhero fights yet."

Still, I'm a sucker for Karl Urban's acting and general dunking on chuds lol

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago

I really like Karl Urban's acting too. He's one of those "tough guy" actors where he genuinely seems like a tough dude in the mold of fellas like Charles Bronson, Toshiro Mifune, or Liev Schrieber. It adds believability.

[–] RedundantClam@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago

I think they're doing one more season and that's it, at least I saw a headline that said that.

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

No. CIA saves the world, harvey weinstein BAD, jeff bezos BAD, celebrities BAD, bald female psychic woman, nazi breastfeeding, orange man politics

I saved you 4 seasons

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 8 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Imagine cape shit but β€œwhat if corporations BAD?”

Extremely boring, surface level criticism of le crony capitalism. If you want to watch good cape shit, watch Birdman because it isnt capeshit

[–] Grebgreb@hexbear.net 22 points 5 months ago

They did this with season 2 as well, I wouldn't be surprised if they did it with 3 too.

[–] Thallo@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago

Idk the writing went downhill in S3, so I wouldn't be surprised if S4 continues the trend

Its bonkers how we have this conversation every season, as Chuds figure it out more.

Side note, the storyline where vought uses Queen Maeves sexuality as marketing against her wishes is maybe one of the only mainstream tv show critiques of rainbow capitalism Ive seen?

[–] Lawn_and_disorder@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

Season 4 or 5 should show Lovesausage and the good Soviet antifascism, if it follows the comics.

[–] Lawn_and_disorder@hexbear.net 1 points 4 months ago

The comics are great. I don't expect the series to follow them when it comes to the Soviet and Lovesausage story unfortunately

[–] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

In season 4 it went from a dramedy satire of capeshit with gratuitous violence to gratuitous violence with some plot threads holding it together.
