I'm guessing they both have just enough English that along with some hand gestures it works out okay
I've always assumed that Putin can understand spoken English far better than he can speak it.
Putin can probably speak English well enough, there's just little need for him to do so publicly. If his accent isn't perfect it'd get so much scrutiny, so better to just use translators.
