Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Please don't post about US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

If by chatting about “technology,” you mean “bragging about running Linux on a 15 year old salvaged computer,” then yes.
I don't brag. I inform. If you choose to admire me for it, it's your own responsibility.
You even brag about bragging, deceivingly.
I think they mean like IRC, Matrix, or Discord: real-time chat rather than asynchronous. They may mean such a thing integrated into a Lemmy client, but it's pretty unclear in the original question.
I meant a place to make online friends to chat about technology and other stuff.
I might check out matrix.
That's less about the app and more about the community I would say. I get into those kinds of discussions on freenode (irc) but also on some old school web forums. I'm not hip enough for Matrix but I guess it has some users too.
Nintendo DS pictochat rooms
That doesn't seem healthy.
If you mean real time chat, then there are a bunch of matrix rooms or discord servers, depending on how corporate-friendly your mindset is.
Look into irc.
You might want to look into smaller Lemmy instances that ask users to apply to join. Small instances can have pretty tight communities and you can meet people. People aren’t as faceless as they are on larger instances.
Stack on the playstore is stack exchange has all those type of topics or hacker news
Probably very niche but you could get into meshtastic. Most people who own a node a pretty interested in tech.
Edit:
You should probably check meshmap.net first before buying a device
Try to login into BBS. Use your computer, telnet or dial up like the old day
Discord?
There are tons of HackerNews apps now.
Hack, Harmonic, and Trilby are my favorites.
