This is a real concern. When Stephen Harper was elected in Canada he silenced government scientists, shut down government libraries, and ordered that climate and other research be destroyed. Neo-fascists will burn the country to the ground to push their political agenda.

Biden should start ousting conservative appointees and other officials any way possible and goad Congress into passing laws to restrict his ability to "drain the swamp".

The problem is that the christofascists have already won. The Supreme Court is filled with christofascist activist judges who will ignore precedent and rewrite settled law. Donald Trump is just a useful idiot to be disposed of once they have consolidated power. The left plays by the rules in a system that was setup to assume that everyone played by the rules. When you get a group like the christofascists who are willing to ignore the rules to destroy democracy and establish a christofascist autocracy you can't beat them by playing by the rules. There is no constutional way to get rid of the Supreme Court because the christofascists have cheated and gerrymandered and voter suppressed to the point where the majority can't gain enough seats to actually impeach them. Everything is lost unless the left does what needs to be done to stop the christofascists.

Do you have sources on the Stephen Harper stuff? Not doubting, I just need ammunition because I have to argue this point with boomers.

Watching the CDC eat buckets of shit during the global pandemic - arguably their reason for existing - was beyond sad.

Reminder that the EPA was created by Nixon so that Congress wouldn't create an environmental agency that could actually hold businesses accountable.

On its best day the EPA already isn't enough.

And like, sure, we're better off now that rivers aren't spontaneously catching fire, but we need more. Just preventing modern Republicans from tearing down what we currently have just isn't enough to protect the environment

It was just enough to take the wind out of the sails of a green movement.

Enough pollution to cause lasting damage, but just short of enough for a majority of Americans to care about the damage.

Conservatism and science do not mix.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You could build a conservatism around conservation of the environment that people depend on, rather than conserving the wealth and privilege of the powerful. That's not the modern one though, at all.

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

Unfortunately, conservationism and conservatism are not related at all, despite their similar sounding names. Environmental conservationism has always been a progressive ideal, while killing animals and destroying the environment has always been a conservative ideal.

It's the War on Truth. Or from the other perspective, the War for Alternative Facts.

Theofascists or theocrats always try to hide or destroy what challenges their authority. Just like ISIS or the Taliban or whoever destroy ancient artifacts or temples to remove the idea that different gods or rules could exist. Except our Supply Side Jesus evangelicals also want to protect their business buddies’ bank accounts so they don’t have to do things like deal with climate change or respect LGBTQ people.

sad (to be said in trump voice)
