Akshually, the song 'Hurt' is originally from Trent Reznor / 'Nine Inch Nails'.

[–] Vinny_93@lemmy.world 47 points 5 months ago (2 children)

There we go, that didn't take long

[–] _different_username@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, if that's what Johnny Cash was talking about, then what was Trent Reznor talking about?

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

His empire of shit. Probably fertilizer, creating a healthy garden.

Edit: see below. I remembered wrong.

[–] audiomodder@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 5 months ago (2 children)

The empire is DIRT. The crown is SHIT. Get it right

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You're right. That'll teach me to comment while sober. I'd have remembered that if I were drunk.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Sober is Tool, try to keep up.

Empire = dirt Crown = thorns/shit (JC/NIN) Chair = liar’s

My wife is gonna appreciate the meme, but yeah, she's gonna roll her eyes about who the song is attributed to... all the more reason to send it.

I'm pretty sure it's the worm thing.

[–] joneskind@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Is the NIN version of Hurt about worms though?

That’s what I thought…

[–] Successful_Try543@feddit.de 4 points 5 months ago

Maybe, but both artists didn't necessarily think about the same.

I love the different styles of Cash's version, nine inch nails, and the Eric Whitacre choral version. They all bring out different parts of the text, and the comparison is fascinating.

While we're at it I'd like to mention this bardcore version I found that's pretty good

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Well that's an immediate subscribe from me.

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Well that was quite the rabbit hole. 2 new subscriptions out of it.

[–] SuperNinjaFury@lemm.ee 1 points 5 months ago

Hell yeah! Glad I could help you find something you like, same thing happened to me when I first ran across that channel a few months ago lol.

[–] mr_sifl@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

My favorite version is NIN with Bowie

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 1 points 5 months ago

True, but like Watchtower by Hendrix, the covering artist to the original's lunch money, and now that song is his.

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

He should have said empire of soil then

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

That's why he says, "I will let you down. I will make you hurt." He's torturing the worms.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 1 points 5 months ago

Damn rights...
