This crazy religious fundamentalism has to go. I'm not a fan of pork, but maybe it's worth making bismillah pork eating videos on tiktok to show solidarity with this poor woman and mock the fundamentalists.

[–] autotldr@lemmings.world 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is the best summary I could come up with:

An Indonesian court has sentenced a woman to two years in jail for posting a viral TikTok video where she said an Islamic phrase before eating pork.

In March, she posted a video where she uttered "Bismillah" - an Arabic phrase that means "in the name of God" - before eating crispy pork skin.

The video got millions of views and was widely criticised, prompting another Indonesian to report her to the police for "knowingly eating pork skin as a Muslim".

Police charged Ms Lutfiawati in May for disseminating hateful information, saying it was an act of hostility over ethnicity, religion, and race.

Rights groups and activists in Indonesia have long criticised the blasphemy laws, which they say are frequently misused to target religious minorities.

Indonesian police last year arrested six people after a bar promoted free alcohol - prohibited in Islam - for customers named Mohammed.

The original article contains 378 words, the summary contains 147 words. Saved 61%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

Bruh, I thought it was a man made summary until I read it to the end. Lmao

The summary is pretty good btw.

Religion of peace! They'll bring love to the west!

[–] Gympie_Gympie_pie@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The Christian west is already extremely hateful on its own. There’s no hate like Christian love

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Yes, both are religions of love /s.

I agree with you.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Nice dog whistle. Ridiculous laws being applied based on religion is not a problem exclusive to Islam, it's a problem with religion getting mixed with politics in general, which is why separation of church (or, I guess, mosque in this case) and state is so important.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Yay theocracy...

[–] HurlingDurling@lemm.ee -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All religions are about peace... until the extremists come along

[–] DieterParker@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

"fundamentalists" ✌️

[–] Anonbal185@aussie.zone 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Her mistake was to do it in a Muslim country. I have a Muslim friend you wouldn't even know if they didn't tell you.

Outdrinks everyone, sometimes eats pork but rarely. But that's because they only get pub food, according to him food just takes up space that can otherwise be occupied by beer/vodka/gin/burbon. Noone else I know Muslim or not goes to this extreme, it can't possibly be good for their liver.

He's at least smart enough not to do this in a Muslim country.

[–] kale@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 year ago

There's a joke told around me that explains this. Why do you always invite two Baptists fishing? Because if you invite one Baptist, they'll drink all your beer.

[–] Extrasvhx9he 10 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Sorry to ask and I mean no harm but how serious is eating pork? I'm not religious at all

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 17 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm not religious either but, from the Muslims I've met, this seems to vary according to how religious they happen to be on an individual level. Same thing with make up, in theory it's haram but a lot of women wear it along with their hijab.

What this headline tells me is that things are getting a bit extremist in Indonesia. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I've never been to Indonesia.

[–] poplargrove@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Makeup is only considered forbidden by the more extreme groups, it isnt for moderates. Pork meanwhile is taboo and avoided by everyone.

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I know Muslims that eat pork. Like they dont buy it and cook it, but if someone offers them in a party or whatever, they dont care.

[–] poplargrove@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it's fun how religiosity varies. I've a friend who doesn't even pray :)

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Its very prohibited. And very here refer to having many statements about it in both Quran, the holy book, and Hadith, the prophet Muhammad sayings.

However, to my knowledge this case shouldn't go to the court in the first place because all the islamic warning are personal. It is like breakout a fast, its personal and there are no law or instructions for a punishment for it.

This shows how bad are the "islamic" groups in Indonesia are. Because in many cases they are doing things that completely unfounded by Islam. I cannot even call them fundamentalist.

[–] Bondrewd@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Most fundamentalist groups are fundamentalists for the fact that they only know the fundamentals for understanding religious texts.

Actually useful concepts and conclusions to be made evade them. And that is not only for religion.

Really. It is borderline a synonym with "dumb motherfucker".

[–] kale@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

Fundamentalism in Christianity means you interpret Scripture with two rules that are a lot like Occam's Razor. The first is that text is interpreted literally unless it has obvious indications that it is not literal. The second is that the Tanakh (which Christians call the Old Testament) is followed unless the New Testament specifically comments on it.

Fundamentalist Christians don't believe in evolution because there's nothing in Genesis that hints at allegory, and it's not mentioned in the new testament. Eating pork and shellfish is allowed because that is specifically addressed as being Ok. Something like the Talmud in Judaism or Papal Bull / Canon in Catholicism, where Scripture can be interpreted in a more complex light, is not used at all. That's a hallmark of fundamentalism in Christianity.

It's the worst sin you could ever commit if you're a muslim, the same level as murder. They treat it as eating shit, but idk, as a non-religious chinese that's the best shit we ever got.

[–] stephen01king@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

Where the heck do you even get this idea from? I've never ever heard it be treated the same level as murder. Do you have any source to back this up?

[–] Swim@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

about as bad as eating cows in india

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I disagree with that. Cows are sacred to Hindus, pigs are abhorred by Muslims. Most (all?) Muslim countries have minority groups that eat pigs. That's fine. However, a Muslim eating a cow in India could easily lead to a really bad time.

There is no actual Islamic punishment for eating pigs, at least not one that I heard of. But who knows with the way people "laissez faire" do religion these days [see conservative Christian Americans calling some of Jesus' teachings too woke].

Some info, first response by Google: https://islamqa.info/en/answers/49688/why-is-pork-haram

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 year ago

conservative Christian Americans calling some of Jesus’ teachings too woke

I'm not even surprised.

[–] poplargrove@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

P.S even if they occasionally get things right, islamqa.info is a fundamentalist site that follows a very recent ideology that isnt what most muslims believe, and against the established schools of law in islam. Best not to use it.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Is there an alternative that you can recommend? Thank you for your advice.

[–] Marsupial@quokk.au 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Aren’t cows what you reincarnate into if you fuck up enough? Like they’re the lowest of all, so being kind to them is virtuous.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Interesting. I have never heard of that. I heard of a Hindu diety once being a cowherd in a specific incarnation however.

[–] Marsupial@quokk.au 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly I don’t know if it’s true, hence the question. I saw an Indian person talking about it once, but it’s a hard topic to research in English.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I don't know myself. However, it does seem unlikely that being a cockroach is somehow an improvement to an animal that is treated and protected well.

[–] yabai@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Anyone have a link to this allegedly blasphemous TikTok video?

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

She just said in the nsme of god and eats some pork, nothing crazy

Dumb fucking morons.
