You might be able to calm them down enough with a bee smoker to try something to get your birds snacking on them?
Edit: attempted to rephrase for clarity. Oh, and if you're buying a smoker from a beekeeping supplier, may as well pick up a veil. Loose fitting coveralls tucked into gloves and boots can help with bee stings - no idea about your hornets.
