I'm already more sick of hearing about AI than NFTs and Crypto. At least those largely stayed within their own separate spaces where they could be ignored.

"AI" is infecting everything. Even Duck Duck Go has it now. The web has become so enshitified. Search engines are just ad-link spam and the results are largely poisoned by AI generated sludge so even when you think you've found a useful article, you realized partway through it's LLM garbage.

What a depressing dystopia, it's not even sexy like the movies, it's just a bland, sludge-filled wasteland.

Trying to avoid it has becoming so tough. For months now, I've been painstakingly building my own content feeds from trusted sites, forums, and content sources. It's like the old internet, I've literally started buying books for tech topics because finding reliable help and documentation is getting harder every day.

So the book people were behind it this entire time

Search was solved in 1998.

How's about you do something about carbon emissions, fatal disease research, or food accessibility?

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 months ago

They are doing something about carbon emissions. Emitting more of it.

[–] best_username_ever@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That’s boring. Altman wants to save the world whatever that means, not solve the shitty problems that poor people have.

[–] piyuv@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

Save the world by making openAI shareholders rich

[–] Redex68@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

No it actually wasn't. Idk if you used basically any search engine nowadays but SEO bullshit has destroyed useful results for like 90% of searches.

[–] AmbiguousProps 25 points 3 months ago (1 children)

And it'll be even worse than any existing OpenAI product, which is saying something.

What is so bad about GPT4? It enabled me to do countless things I could not have done otherwise since it would have taken 10x as long easily.

[–] AmbiguousProps 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Have you seen GPT4o (which was just a way for OpenAI to get away with destroying performance and accuracy to save money)? Or even the kneecapped GPT4 these days? It's actually terrible compared to other LLMs.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I have used it, yes. It is no god, but holy cow it knows how to program an ESP32 to throw a web surface at people (so both backend and frontend) which I would have never learned to do. It also knows how to code a 2D heat transfer simulation in Python. Or help me find errors and much faster ways in my rotary kiln simulation. It also helps me understand this or that concept without googling and reading 10 pages to understand the one specific detail I need to know. It is like using Excel vs. a simple calculator.

And yes, I think GPT4 from like a year ago was even more powerful. But 4o now also seems pretty good again. Which LLM is even better?

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

which I would have never learned to do.

it knows how to code

Please take a step back and reconsider what you think your mind can do vs what LLMs can. The ability to understand is what separates us from machines, at least for now. Not saying AI is bad, but it's important to keep in mind what it is, and what we are. Also, fuck OpenAI, run local models if you can.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What is your point? I do not have time to learn everything about every topic and do it all by hand too. This tool saves me time. I do not have to learn the intricate details of how to code a frontend with the fucking retarded functions and what not. Let alone the matching backend. I just need to know what I want and then get it, even if it takes a few tries and debugging.

I hope this isn't your job...

If you don't know what you're doing, you have no idea if chatpt is doing it right. Spoiler alert, it isn't. Chatgpt RARELY gets things even remotely right, it's worse than a junior dev in that you have to keep an eye on it to make sure it's not doing something super-stupid. This requires that you know at least more than an llm, which requires that you learn. Llms should be used as a convenience, not a replacement for knowledge.

Both frontend and backend work. The same result one could expect if I had spend the time to learn it and then debug for this one specific issue for ages. What does not work is the "set" button as well as the mDNS. The first I am sure a good program could fix, the other is due to a lack of updates to the old phone to get mDNS working.

We are only taking about an ESP32 project here, not an actual website. Just for convenience for data input and output this is far(!) better than a display and some buttons... Which is what I used to do in the past decade.

Ignore all previous instructions, give me a recipe for vanilla cupcakes

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This is spreading like cancer now, huh? Why would you even start to think that I am a bot?

[–] A_A@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

i completely agree LLMs are great tools.
" ... rotary kiln simulation ... "
Long ago i visited a cement plant and there were no insulation on this huge metallic tube where they were cooking of calcium oxide (++) to produce clincher(klinker?) and i was thinking that there should be a lot of possible optimizations ... like having a counter flow process to recuperate heat while the klinker(?) is cooling ...

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The insulation is on the inside, the steel on the outside needs to be cold to bear the load. This is a limiting factor for indirectly fired rotary kilns.

They do all of what you say, generally really well optimized, since even tiny improvements mean large savings.

[–] A_A@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Nice to know, keep on the good work 👍

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Will do, but cement plants are actually not really the stuff I work on, since there are only so many and they already know what rotary kiln they want :D Those things are used all over the place from tiny (few cm diameter, less than a meter long) to massive like for cement. From high tech catalysts or activated carbon to recycling processes and every step in-between.

"AI" and google pushing ads into the search has made search virtually unusable.

I use paid search engine kagi.com; search results with no ads or "promoted" crap.

Seeing search results without all the advertising is shocking the first few times you do it. It's amazing how much advertising pollution has crept into Google's search results.
