It's like watching a DnD campaign but much better. Also feels far more mature compared to anime.

I just found this a couple weeks ago and finished the second season a few days ago, the dialogue can be a little Marvel-esque sometimes but it's overall really fun.

I recall some furor with the Kickstarter for this project. They made it so backers would only get to see the first two episodes, like, twice, on Amazon for free and then tough shit, pay for Prime to see the rest of the episodes you paid to create.

Anyways, I gave it a shot and bounced off instantly because it did that obnoxious thing cartoons for grownups do where it was full of piss and shit and fucking and cussing to make sure you, the audience, knew that this wasn't no children's show, this was adult animation.

it was full of piss and shit

So someone here made it?

[–] fox@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If so it'd be peepee poo poo and owls

If you liked the rest of it outside of the piss and shit and fucking most of that gets toned down a lot after the first few episodes, the cussing is pretty common throughout though. It's similar to how the Orville was Family Guy in space for the first half of season 1 that he had sold the executives on before just making it a Trek series.

Tbh I'm not much a fan of Critical Role at large as they've gotten bigger and more corporate

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Lol that they kickstartered it, good way to steal money from fans. Amazon clearly has no issue throwing away money on risky shows so it definitely wasn't necessary.

Why do all the adult animation action shows look like Castlevania now?

[–] Comp4@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think they could look far worse. Looking at Southpark and Bigmouth

[–] GlueBear@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

I mean yeah, but like would it kill them to change the style of the eyes at least?

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Ngl I had to check to see if it was animated by the same studio, I assume it was because Castlevania is popular.

I am almost done with the first campaign of critical role. Has only taken me 2 1/2 years lol

I was just talking to a friend about this that I got to watch Vox Machina with me that I really struggle with paying attention to people sitting around a table talking for hours. Like I enjoyed Harmon Quest because there's a visual medium for most of it, I tried watching Critical Roll and I don't think I made it through the first episode.

The first episode of Campaign 1 is rough. They literally started the livestream from a home game that had been going for a couple of years and I don't think anyone knew what they were doing. I honestly skipped to midway through the Briarwood arc which is what the show covered partially because better production, and one of the founders who was driving me (and the players) insane left.

I haven't watched the other Campaigns yet. I know 2 is very good and actually tells a full story. Actual plays aren't for everyone but the show does cover it very well.

There is a third season coming this year (I think). Its not my fave thing but its quite good as far as cartoons go.

[–] GVAGUY3@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I think in October. They are also making a series on the Mighty Nein

[–] Comp4@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I heard about Mighty Nein. If its close in quality to Vox Machina I will be there day 1 for it.

[–] GVAGUY3@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think it will be. I've heard Campaign 2 is the best one.

[–] Comp4@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah im certainly hopeful

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

I played d&d in high school and thought I'd give this a try. I couldn't tolerate the Bard. Does he get less annoying at some point?

[–] Sulvor@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

Don't slander the Scan Man

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bard is like the most developed character in the show lol.

[–] AlwaysTheir@lemmy.one 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Are you saying his character develops and gets less annoying or just that his character develops and he continues to be annoying but it's worth it?

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He gets less annoying and has good moments. But there are still moments where you’ll hate him for who he is which in my opinion is what makes his character good and interesting.

[–] AlwaysTheir@lemmy.one 1 points 1 month ago

Compelling. You've inspired me to watch again when the rains return.

[–] roux@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

Sam Riegel is a national treasure.

[–] Babs@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I like how they can't obviously make it set in Golarion (Pathfinder setting) but it is absolutely a Pathfinder game. The cleric is a cleric of ~~Sarenrae~~the Dawnflower, eventually a character becomes a Mortal Usher (Pathfinder prestige class, but the abilities and theming match up so close!)

Show is pretty fun. Thought I'd hate it but like, it was alright.

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Isn't it a custom DND game though? Like these guys were under threat 2 years ago when Wizards did rhe OGL bullshit.

[–] TechnoUnionTypeBeat@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

It was, if I recall, a Pathfinder campaign that turned to 5th edition after 5e came out. That's why some characters are broken, like the ranger having an effectively useless bear companion, or the rogue with boots of haste being utterly overpowered: they ported the characters over without knowing the quirks of 5e

[–] Babs@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

I never listened to the podcast. I just saw "goddess of healing, the sun, and redemption, called The Dawnflower" (Sarenrae's nickname and domains) and "creepy agent of the neutral goddess of death and fate who has crow-themed abilities and a cloak that lets you fly" (which is what a Mortal Usher of Pharasma is/does). At least that much is very Pathfinder.
