This is my first hearing of this story. This is both enlightening and just plain sad.
When asked his name, he said: "I have none, because there were no people to name me", meaning that there was no other Yahi to speak his name on his behalf.
That is such a somber thing. We truly only exist in each other.
Damn.
Are there not even half-Yahi folks out there? Native Americans have it worse than us Indians. Didn't get to reclaim their land, don't have the right to govern themselves on their own territory, no reparations or proper, actionable formal apologies, destruction of cultural identity and linguicide, and also the poorest, most vulnerable groups in the USA.
The Yana are related to the Yahi and lived north of them. The few remaining reside in the Redding Rancheria
