i just don't get how this shit works. last night i clicked on something on hexbear that took me to lemmy.blahaj or something, and one of the first banners i see on a community says "fuck tankies". what is that site, how is it related to this one? then there's lemmygrad. also one i find myself on from this site. but despite looking identical my hexbear account doesn't work on there so it's not part of hexbear?

my ass is stupid and confused.

Lemmy is a broad federation of different islands, or sites. You can visit these sites from other sites and comment on their communities, or stay on your own island.

Hexbear is federated with some sites, like Lemmygrad, and defederated from others, like Blahaj.

Lemmygrad is its own equivalent to Hexbear, and people on Lemmygrad can and do participate in Hexbear discussions, and vice-versa.

I have a (mostly dormant) hexbear account!

I use this one because of the age, read it and weep nerds

It might be helpful to think about federation sort of like the email protocol. Users with different email providers can still send emails to each other

Hexbear is a Lemmy instance, people can create accounts submit links and post comments. Users with accounts from other Lemmy instances can also submit links and post comments, as long as the site has allowed users from that instance

Additionally, like the email analogy, Lemmy instances can also display content from other instances as long as the site has allowed content from that instance

We have six bears here. They don’t even have one.

Hexbear is one of many lemmy instances, and so is lemmy.blahaj. Each instance has its own admins and rules. Content can be shared between individual instances.

Edit: You have an account on hexbear, so you can log in to hexbear, not other instances.

You have an account on hexbear, so you can log in to hexbear, not other instances.

But you can comment on other federated instances through your Hexbear account. So instead of logging into lemmygrad with your Hexbear account, you interact with lemmygrad content on Hexbear.

You can. However, you need to access the community in question through hexbear, not on the instance of that community.

This only works if that other instance hasn't blocked hexbear though.

Hexbear is all liberals all the time. Other instances have some liberals, but also various forms of socialist.

Hexbear is a Lemmy. Blahaj is a different Lemmy. Lemmygrad is a third Lemmy. There's also a Lemmy that's called "Lemmy", so that can be confusing.

The Lemmys all talk to each other and share posts, which helps them all have more content. But it also means that sometimes wildly different communities come into contact with one another, which can cause problems. It's easy to get used to one Lemmy's rules but then you go to another where the rules are different and break them without realizing it.

I'm a Hexbear native, but I made an account on lemm.ee because I wanted to see a more diverse feed (Hexbear's site culture causes a lot of friction with other Lemmys, so its blocked by many of them). Still I mostly browse Hexbear's communities cuz this is where the best content is, generally speaking.
