Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Does anyone else find "Giggle" to be a sexist and infantalising name for a woman's only app?

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 28 points 1 month ago

I feel that bad vibe from it, too.

It's a bit like when I see "fren" said in the internet wild: some people just say it without thinking about it and not even knowing where it started, but it's fucking sus to me.

[–] take_five_seconds@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

didn't their founder post about us on twitter?

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes she got upset that we were calling her Eve Fartlow

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

lol

but seriously i'm still so sad that Sall managed to bite her tongue and didn't follow through on her threats to name us on a National TV morning show interview at the time

[–] take_five_seconds@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

for real Hexbear mentioned on aus TV would've been extremely funny

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Maybe we should just harass random rich people until one name drops us lmao

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not really a rich person, but it would be funny to do to Drew Pavlou, who's just the most pathetic Australian gremlin on the internet.

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

we basically already have, i'm sure a number of us have been QT'd and he seethes at Slammer weekly

Cubehead's use to mainstream media has already fizzled out completely, we need to aim higher

[–] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

What happened to Pete Evans, does he tweet

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I am about to commence a protracted people's harassment campaign against Tim Gurner

e: actually nah, 5head will probably stay out of the media limelight after he got eviscerated last year. I'll have to pick another mouthy property developer

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

Hearing hexbear said with an Australian TV anchor accent would send me

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

Almost the funniest thing that's happened on this site

[–] CliffordBigRedDog@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

"laugh more darling"

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It's a pretty fitting name for a social media app

Feel like the issue is giggling being seen as feminine and thus childish and infantalising is the attitude that's sexist rather than the actual connotation of giggling with women being sexist

[–] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I don’t see giggling as feminine and thus childish, I see giggling as childish full stop, no connection to femininity, which is why I think it’s weird that they conflate women and giggling

Like I even feel weird reading your comment because it basically reads to me as: Feel like the issue is dinosaur chicken nuggets being seen as feminine and thus childish and infantalising is the attitude that's sexist rather than the actual connotation of dinosaur chicken nuggets with women being sexist.

Like nah the part I’m questioning is definitely the connection of dinosaur chicken nuggets to women.

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Why is laughing childish. Maybe I don't fully understand what "giggling" is exactly

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 47 points 1 month ago (3 children)

The founder was working in hollywood and moved back to au after years of sexual discrimination and harrassment, only to project all those big feelings onto transpeople.

oh and the app determined feeeeemaleness with an ai that basically would only identify whities as women lol

would you believe it

did it even stay up? I thought it got taken down after a security breach or one of her cis twitter warrior friends got denied by their AI or something

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

yeah it got taken down i think but i got on it when it first launched, the posts were awful

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

Also i'd never thought to check linkedIn for anti trans people, but shockingly terfs are all professional as

[–] bunnygirl@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

pog

also "Tickle sued Giggle" is such a funny phrase

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

This is one of the choice bits of HB lore it really felt like the old r/cth days of harassment

[–] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The Federal Court found that Roxanne Tickle had not been directly discriminated against but had been the victim of indirect discrimination

The "indirect" discrimination:

Justice Robert Bromwich noted that Giggle’s founder, Sall Grover, removed Tickle when she saw her photo and “considered her to be male”. Giggle had argued that the discrimination was permitted because, in its view, Tickle was of the male sex, and that was unchangeable.

Massive win for Roxanne. Reading the unadalteraded biaoqing-copium from the lawyer and unimelb phd is cherry on the cake

[–] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

I’m sorry Giggle vs Tickle?
