MODERATORS

Hello users of hexbear, we have started discussions with an admin of lemmy.ca regarding potential refederation. Lemmy.ca had added hexbear to their blocklist about a year ago: https://lemmy.ca/post/3326347

With the recent changes in lemmy features as well as a maturing fediverse the mods/admins of hexbear and lemmy.ca are open to trying again, but before we put lemmy.ca on our allow-list we wanted to open up discussion and voting to the users of hexbear.

This vote will be binding with regard to adding lemmy.ca to our allow-list. In addition, the idea of including sh.itjust.works in this discussion was raised but was voted down by a majority of mods from inclusion.

https://lemmy.ca/c/canada and https://lemmy.ca/c/pcgaming are the instance's top two communities but there are a few other small, niche communities. A community that may be removed from hexbear is the https://lemmy.ca/c/fediverselore so please indicate your opinion on this community if you have one.

As usual please use

dean-smile if you would like lemmy.ca to be added to our allow-list

dean-frown if you would like lemmy.ca to not be added to our allow-list

We will leave this post unlocked for a few days before making the decision, thank you. Users may also use this post for a general discussion on federation including naming instances for federation/defederation or feedback for the hexbear admin/mod team.

Not all Lemmy.ca users are bad-faith, and the ones who are can be dealt with individually. Having access to PCGaming would be fun, Games is my preferred gaming community but not everything is posted there at the moment, so I miss major news.

Plus, agitprop is a good thing.

Specific communities can be blocked if necessary, but overall I feel like more people seeing Hexbear is a good thing.

I think we can take this down tbh considering their admin threw in the towel already

But it would have been funny

dean-smile because us being on a recent enough Lemmy version means that

  • Hexbear or Lemmy.ca can defederate from a specific community if federating with that community becomes a problem
  • Hexbear has already made some communities local-only, which makes those communities unaffected by federating

dean-malice Sure, why not. Shit.just.works can stay away, though.

If this is a representative of the average poster in .ca, I don't think Refed will end well.

I'm neutral - I tend to browse mostly Local anyway. Too many unfunny memes when I get off Hexbear

lemmy.ca is full of typical reddit users, ie. a shitload of landlords and landlord-sympathizers

normally I wouldn't want to associate with such people, but this is exactly the place to post "fuck landlords" at them so dean-smile

Do we have any reason to believe they've improved?

It won't last, but I say refederate with .ca. Make them show their ass and be the ones to defederate from us for obviously bullshit, turbolib lemmitor reasons. Maybe we'll peel off some of the few leftists who've found themselves stuck there.

dean-smile Always happy to fed where it looks plausible we might get by happily enough. If not, we just de-fed again in a week after a day's drama, no biggie.

Is lemmy.ca also running a vote for refederation, or just us? I'm not sure they'd like us rejoining so tbh I'd rather keep it as dean-frown

I wasn't going to vote but the lemmy.ca post about the refederation that's quoting our illustrious ursine comments from this post has convinced me...
