Rough Roman Memes

A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

Explanation: The testudo formation was a distinctively Roman and very useful formation - but not in close combat. It was very much a niche tactic for a Roman unit to defend itself when under heavy missile fire - it is explicitly noted by contemporary writers to have been unsuited for a melee. Hollywood never got the memo.

Roxanne, you don't have to use your shield tonight.

hbo's Rome did it right. they show it one time and it's in response to arrow fire.

otherwise they have legates organizing spear lines and using whistles to time and position them. it was actually quite well done.
