Paulo Freire, born on the 19th of September in 1921, was a Brazilian philosopher and radical pedagogue most known for his 1968 work Pedagogy of the Oppressed. "Language is never neutral."

Paulo was born in Recife, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Initially affluent, his family experienced hardship during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Freire's education suffered due to his own experiences with poverty and hunger.

Freire began working as a schoolteacher in the 1940s, beginning to serve as the director of the Pernambuco Department of Education and Culture in 1946. Due to the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état, where a military dictatorship was put in place with the support of the United States, Paulo Freire was exiled from his home country, an exile that lasted 16 years.

Freire then worked in Chile, until April 1969 when he accepted a temporary position at Harvard University. It was during this period, in 1968, that Freire published his most famous work, "Pedagogy of the Oppressed".

In this text, Freire criticizes what he calls the "banking method" of education, wherein a teacher "deposits" knowledge into an empty vessel, the student, or "bank". Instead, Freire calls upon teacher to engage in a more dialog-centric or creative education, one in which the suppressed experiences of the oppressed help create knowledge, fostering a social reality in which the marginalized are humanized.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed has since become the third most cited book in the social sciences, according to Elliott D. Green. As of 2000, the book had sold over 750,000 copies worldwide.

"Manipulation, sloganizing, depositing, regimentation, and prescription cannot be components of revolutionary praxis, precisely because they are the components of the praxis of domination."

Paulo Freire

The idea of ongoing conversations is so exciting. I'd love to be a part of a conversation that continues someday

Anyone ever had "non-traditional" effects from weed? I rarely use weed, but a few months back I took an edible, and accidently took about twice as much as I thought. I took 5mg gummies way back, and that was nice, so I figured I'd take two instead, try slightly more. But the gummies were actually 10mg, so I went from 5 -> 20.

Things were cool for a short period when I started feeling it, but then my brain kinda broke for a bit. I think I was in the hallucination/psychosis zone, though I feel kind of silly typing that out right now.

I, being dumb, and considering buying more edibles (weaker edibles).

How dumb am I being right now?

Got the novavax finally this year. Overall a much better experience than the pfizer ones; usually i get severe chills, headache, bodyaches. This time was much more mild and i slept through the night without issues.

1 month later and i still think it is so fucking wack that i let my insecurities and fear of uncertainty push me to blow up an amazing early romantic connect and now there's a good chance this person i grew close with very rapidly can't even be in my life as a friend. still think that is extremely fucking stupid. opinion on that course of action hasn't budged an inch disgost

I remember while back we had these little gnomes on our window near the sink, I'd talk to them when I was washing dishes or cooking and they helped me pass the time and made me feel less lonely. One day they disappeared and I asked my family where they went, no one had any fucking clue what the hell I was talking about scared eventually I asked my sister about them after days of me being paranoid turns out she moved them but since she was working a weird shift I just didn't see her for a while and couldn't ask phoenix-sweat

Bourgeois farmers market cops banned me for farting too loudly. I should have never expected those irrational neo traditionalists to have a historically informed appreciation for the role of public flatulists. you-are-a-serf

Theoretical question. How many pictures is too many pictures for an effort post about an old video game? Can I just upload them through Hexbear? I'm thinking 20-30. Is that too many? What size should I make them in order to make a good balance between server bandwidth and visibility?

The illegal Zionist entity is preventing the evacuations of children in critical condition to South Africa, with several having already died while awaiting treatment and escape to Johannesburg. - Salaamedia, PCRF

Already there is no longer any medical functions present in the besieged city-state, with children and families prevented from leaving, extorted for money at crossings and having documents destroyed.

All I want to do is talk to a semi-competent rep about my insurance claim with a little bit of nuance and they’ve added ai bullshit to the already very cumbersome process of working your way through the bureaucracy

I can’t believe we’ve allowed this to happen chat, it’s infecting fucking everything

I start almost every comment I make with

I know this will net me a ban

to play a bit of reverse psychology with the mods, who don’t touch my comments when the denizens there inevitablely say

Oh yeah you think you’re so smart well we don’t ban opposing opinions unlike some places

And the mods there have their hands tied because banning me would prove their own guys wrong.

It’s worked pretty well so far.

Lol, i would still ban you, really great taglines. Lol also this one

we're here to laugh at the picture of a pig shitting on its own balls, this is not a communist org. we're not here to "up the ante" lmao

It'd be funny to name a political party "the Serious Party" and then you could be like "I'm the only Serious candidate in this race!" Or during a debate you could be like "You can't be Serious."

2nd therapy sesh and i'm starting to feel it's a bit paint by numbers and generic. not much beyond mirroring/parroting. maybe it just starts with that until the relationship is more established/deepened, but idk. i'll give it a few more sessions but not sure it's gonna help me much w/ this particular practitioner.

EDIT: actually i think i'm gonna listen to my gut and just fire this therapist and find a better fit. life's too short, my gut's usually right about this kind of thing. giving things a chance can be overrated sometimes.

Nice, new mega right after I finish my latest project, perfect timing! As usual, spoiler just to keep the spam down:

belt timeHeres the whole belt, its about 56in/1.4m in length, which is on the shorter side of my belts, but since I used some of the lenght to make trimmings for my tunic's cuffs it makes sense. It works fine as a belt as well, not too short or long.

Pattern close up

Heres the back, non-reversible unfortunately but thats not a big deal.

And here it is with my tunic. I love the way it matches with the trim, it works perfectly. It works better with the black tunic vs just the white one, but together they work best since the trim is on the white one. Most of my belts are going to be presents for Yule but I'm keeping this one for myself.

(inappropriate use of a penannular brooch here, but it holds really well and looks nice)

[–] mbt2402@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

thats beautiful. what culture is this fashion from?

[–] asa_red_heathen@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

Well Im imitating Norse period tablet woven patterns, though Im unsure if they'd match any archeological finds exactly since Im not trying to be super period accurate. The tunic and leg wraps are Norse as well, but Im not well versed on the historical accuracy of their cut/style.

Tablet weaving itself has been around for much longer, back to at least the 800s bc afaik so its not specific to any one culture, but im definitely trying to emulate a viking style of dress.

roommates employer (a hotel) has had workers 'soldering' in the AC system for the past week, my roommate has asthma and has had to leave work early every day this week, while his boss and fellow employees gaslight him saying they don't personally smell anything so it must be ok/his individual mental problem, which is maliciously ignorant since solder material has lead in it, and the fumes are very toxic. its not in my roommates head as i can personally smell the fumes on his clothes after he gets home and i don't have asthma like he does. i'm in the US, is there any grounds to sue here? like i am concerned with the health of all the guests at the hotel, the entire building smells, no shot its good to sleep through that kind of fume exposure.

edit: ~~also my roommate fell asleep remarkably early today, like right after work, and has been asleep all day. its like an hour past his normal bedtime now. i've kind of been panicking worrying he died from some kind of delayed asthma complications or something (we were supposed to get groceries today, but i got no responses via texting so i went alone) but i'm too socially anxious to check for fear of being needlessly obnoxious/waking him up unwantedly. so i guess i'm just going to marinate in existential terror until tomorrow~~ no untimely demises this time, fortunately or unfortunately we both persist in the cycle of samsara for now
