Just like… why the fuck would you even bother lying when you could just say the truth and it proves the point you’re trying to make anyway? What a fucking moron.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 44 points 1 month ago (2 children)

He could’ve said $3 eggs, and he’d still be lying.

Egg prices are up across the globe because of bird flu. If the Biden administration wasn’t reimbursing farmers and increasing inspections, supply would be even worse, and prices would be even higher.

^^ This is the reason, but MAGA needs talking points desperately. They have been reduced to lies and Haitians eating your pets.
They would like to push the "border crisis" more but people might realize that the GOP is responsible for the crisis since they refused to pass a bill Republican Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford developed to resolve it.

Across the globe is a stretch. They are 5% cheaper year over year in the EU and the recent week over week is within the norm for seasonal changes.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Prices across western nations are mostly floating in the $3 to $4 usd range.

Also, to see the impact of avian flu, you’ll want a timeline that goes further than YoY data. 2023 was hit really hard by avian flu.

I mean, it's one egg. What would it cost? Ten dollars?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No matter how many men you put in front of standing desks, or how fancy an AI you give them, they can't make an egg. Clearly should be many millions per egg.

If my time in tech has taught me anything there are going to be a surprising amount of eggs in that group of people at desks

5 rows of 6 eggs is…..a hillbillly dozen?

The negative space between the eggs around his head in this image makes him look like he has pigtails. Saw it and had to punish/reward everyone else with it, too.

A trillion here, a trillion there, pretty soon you're talking about the kind of money his backers hope to loot

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

What’s a trillion?

Edit: /s. Though this might give some people an idea of how insane even a billion is.

It's One Banana, Michael. What Could It Cost, $10?

This seems a bit weird to go after when prices are around that in many stores:

https://www.walmart.com/search?q=Eggs

Plus tax.

[–] roy_mustang76@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Because the "regular" grocery store he's standing in is clearly selling them for less than that?

Seems like a pretty roastable unforced error to me.

(Also I know not everyone has options around them, but traditional grocers still tend to be cheaper on most grocery items than Walmart or Target, there is in fact a cost to the one stop shop)

[–] ABCDE@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean yeah, but not every store sells for that price. The price he mentioned isn't a lie, it just isn't true in that exact store.

[–] roy_mustang76@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Well sure, you can always find examples of something being sold for more than average (whether that's because of greed, human error, quality of product, or market strategy), but it doesn't make his statement accurate.

And again, yes I understand that Walmart is selling eggs at around that price point. I'm just saying that if I can regularly find eggs at my local Kroger-owned grocery store for $1 less than Walmart, when Kroger itself is a wannabe monopolistic entity, then Vance is probably stretching the truth as best, if you're uncomfortable saying he's lying.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

LOL, if you scroll down, you can see they can't even boil an egg properly. 😆 🤣 🤣

[–] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

That's a painfully bad headline.

We have white house candidates talking about egg prices? Come the fuck on Michael, what could they cost, $12? Like I supposed to believe JD Vance has stepped inside a grocery store AND had to tally the prices in his head?

I want a new season of schitts creek I feel like this dumbass would be a great villain for their little podunk town, maybe he is buildimg a Walmart! Yeah he looks and sounds perfect for that role. He's gonna make us do a cheer every shift. Someone pants Vance. Make him the joke he is.

Hi fbi it's me Stan, just a joke, on a rhyme, call me if ur concerned, bro

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I mean the video was filmed inside a grocery store, claiming that eggs cost $4 with a sign directly behind him saying 2.99/24.

So yes, he’s stepped in a grocery store- at least once. but I’m pretty sure that actually makes this worse.

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world -3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

When there are so many very legitimate reasons to make fun of these people, I think we're getting a little nit-picky here. I know, the fact that he says it while standing in front of eggs priced $2.99 is low hanging fruit, but I just bought eggs yesterday at the cheapest store in our city and they were $3.76, so he's not actually far off the mark.

I think the more important thing would be to find out if egg prices are suddenly being artificially inflated by poultry farmers in an attempt to influence the election. If so, smack those fuckers down hard post-election.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

If you aren't going to call them out for blatant lies like this, then you can expect them to lie every time it would be to their advantage. Why on Earth would you give them a pass on this? I'm tired of this kind of lie being considered normal. This should not be considered normal.

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It shows his blatant disinterest in fact checking or making the bare minimum effort to try to speak truthfully. He does not care if what he says is true, only if people will believe it.

[–] ccdfa@lemm.ee -1 points 1 month ago

Agreed. Someone also made this little graphic to demonstrate how nit-picky it is. The discussion in this thread is also about how we should be critiquing his claims about why egg prices are the way they are.
