Oh yeah? Explain this, flat earthers!

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 27 points 2 months ago

That image is illegal sir

[–] Ironfacebuster@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Actually not level, the right side is slightly higher

Round earth prevails again, even in the face of another round earther! Take THAT you heathen!

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

All round earthers suck. We all suck!

[–] bpcomp@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

If the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off.

It’d have to be. Otherwise how could the ground be level if we were on the side of a sphere?

Check and mate. 🫳🎤

I enjoy how you had to hold it very specifically this way around so that none of the spirit level bubbles were in the middle.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well, where I live in the world (North Carolina, USA), I would imagine I’m somewhere between the middle of the ball (equator) and the top of the ball (Arctic). So yeah, that happens to be a position where none of the bubbles are in the middle. 😊

You actually don't need to imagine... most maps indicate what the angle should be.

The latitude on the map matches the angle between the North Star and the horizon. It's just a weird coincidence that maps are like that.

I'm telling you, turtles. Turtles all the way down.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And elephants standing on top

[–] Idea@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And old ass lazy light that's in no rush to get anywhere.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ok, the turtles I believe I understand the turtle thing (Kachhapa), maybe. But the elephants and the old ass lazy light?

What?

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Discworld. The light is slowed down by having to ooze through all the magic.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh cool! I’ve heard great things about Pratchett. Maybe I’ll give the series a whirl. Thanks!

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There are many resources online regarding reading order / starting out suggestions (e.g. https://www.discworldemporium.com/reading-order/). However I think the stories are usually light-hearted enough that you might as well start in the middle of a sub-series.

[–] Idea@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah. Terry reestablishes the world in each book.

Anything is level if your level is small enough

[–] NeoNachtwaechter@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Anybody is high if your level is low enough...

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 2 points 2 months ago

Confucius say: man who stands on toilet is high on pot.

[–] NeoNachtwaechter@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Can't you come up with something new?

[–] Trail@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Anything is new if your age is old enough.

[–] ohwhatfollyisman@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

my two cents are, for what it's worth,

that no-one really believes in a flat earth.

they just revel in creating dissension

and crave all the ensuing attention,

so let's let it remain in that realm of mirth.

Nah.

So about 8 years ago I’d never heard of such a thing as flat earth and I’m out with a friend getting twisted up and he says he has a gaff we can go to and he can sell a bit of coke and we can get sniffed up there too.

We get to this shitty flat (not judging I’ve lived in shitty pads and after all we are getting fucked up so can’t judge) and there I meet quite possibly the most intellectually challenged 3 people I’ve ever met (again I’m not genius but I do like to think I have critical thought).

This one girl starts chatting to me about flat earth, not in a way just to be different, but genuinely believed it. Imagine my face when I’m like this can’t be happening, and start to question why it is flat which they can’t really articulate and I just wanted the world to end to get me out of this conversation.

Point being stupid people exist and will believe this shit. Even if the most prominent people are doing it for a grift.

[–] WaxedWookie@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Nope - I've known true believers - while contrarianism is a big motivator, the beliefs are sincere... and from that level of conspiracism, it's a short walk to Nazism.

Actually can happen if the little ampule is misaligned in the housing. Easy to test for, turn the level around, if it reads level one way but not another it's not a good level. Relatedly: Don't buy spirit levels or measuring tools at Harbor Freight.

[–] mattd@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Maybe all the bubbles are wrong

[–] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Now that's ground level!

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

Seems like a level headed maneuver.
