Summary

Thousands of Dubliners, drawn by a fake listing on an AI-generated website, gathered along O’Connell Street expecting a Halloween parade that never materialized. The My Spirit Halloween website, based in Pakistan, falsely advertised that the popular Macnas Halloween Parade would return, leading to crowds lining the streets from Parnell Street to Christchurch Cathedral. As confusion grew, the Gardaí were eventually forced to issue a message urging people to disperse safely. While some attendees found humor in the hoax, others, including Sinn Féin councillor Janice Boylan, expressed disappointment over the dashed hopes for a festive Halloween event.

Another replied: “The real lesson to be learned here is that a lot of people would clearly attend a Halloween parade and Dublin City Council should organise one next year.”

It's going to be kind of funny if a hoax announcement winds up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

There will be a real parade next year.

Everyone will think it's a hoax again and no one will show.

If there are 1000s of people there for a parade, why not just have an impromptu one? Those are the best anyway.

I like to imagine there was a parade of ghosts but they’re all too skeptical to see them.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Was it a Willy Wonka Halloween parade?
