Guess it’s a good thing that NPR barely gets any funding from the federal or state governments then. All this does is get people to donate more to PBS and NPR.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Next they'll try to ban it.

[–] treadful@lemmy.zip 21 points 3 weeks ago

They got that fancy new law to kill non-profits that I'm sure would be useful.

'people' except what you end up with is billionaires and their foundations, so it ends up just being state propaganda with -fewer- steps

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 64 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This bullshit just got me to donate $25. Thanks for reminding me you crazy fucking cunt

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 8 points 3 weeks ago

In December, they tend to have matching offers. So I'll be donating then.

Morons. They think ‘defund’ means ‘get rid of’ because they themselves can’t exist without grift and bailouts.

[–] Garibaldee@lemm.ee 47 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

NPR will probably respond to this by hiring 50 republicans and still get defunded

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 23 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Didn't Nice Polite Republicans already do that?

I stopped listening to them back when they brought an insurance executive on to talk about how great health insurance is at "providing healthcare", but they just need more money.

They're nearly as bad as NYT when it comes to pretending to be the left, but only platforming the center and right.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

My friend, this is unfortunately the reality of all "left" press of any high volume.

We have the Guardian in the UK which is regarded as the lefty paper by many people here, but if you look at the modern editorial slant, particularly around political coverage and you'll find it's very much a centrist paper and occasionally a bit centre-right. They get the odd left-winger in for opinion pieces from time to time to keep up the charade, but you can tell if the LibDems had a chance in hell of being elected, the paper would drop all support for Labour in a heartbeat.

Actual left wing press at any large scale is not permitted to exist by the billionaire classes. If one gets too big, it'll be acquired and the slant will shift before long. Class consciousness is bad for business

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

But they have a lesbian and a brown person talking on the microphone, they’re so lefty look at them!

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 10 points 3 weeks ago

Ah yes, and then have a 2 part series on how the Dems lost by pandering to the left, and how those values in society are long gone.

I just cancelled my New York Times subscription and I'll be sending that money to NPR now. The grey lady has become a corporate stooge anyway.

I just cancelled my New York Times subscription

Good choice!

The grey lady has become a corporate stooge anyway.

Yeah, I know. But it was my stooge.

I wish we could ban news of the USA from "global" news. There are enough communities for US news.

[–] SaltySalamander@fedia.io 15 points 3 weeks ago

Like it or not, the US is part of the globe.

[–] BrikoX@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago

Until tagging comes to Lemmy there isn't much we can do. USA is part of the world so excluding them is not an option. And I would say the community has a healthy balance of news from the rest of the world, so it's not just posts about the USA.

[–] Blackout@fedia.io 5 points 3 weeks ago

Dilution is the best solution

[–] Sarmyth@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Be the change you want to see. Post more global articles yourself.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How? As we know, NPR is funded by viewers like you, and by our corporate sponsors

[–] auzy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Don't forget, an important component of dictatorships is controlling the media

Trump can simply encourage violence against their employees and make them untenable in other ways. Like bring them to court at one of his bribed justices to cost them money

There's lots of ways to kill a company in a way that isn't obvious when you're a dictator

Just remember, Mafia bosses won't tell you they'll injure you. They use coercion and subtle threats

[–] Ildsaye@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

I guess it will have to make do with that Heritage Foundation support it proudly mentions every half hour

[–] zephorah@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

More fund drives.

damn this is uncool
