Will there be a pro version without in-app purchase like there was before? If I could avoid the in-app purchase I'd prefer it. There where weekly threads on Reddit when the in-app version failed to work correctly and I never had any problem with the pro version.

Not planning to. Last year Sync for Reddit had issues with Google as they're clamping down on apps that are similar from the same developer.

[-] GiddyGap@lemmy.world 34 points 11 months ago

Does that mean there's only going to be a subscription based "pro" version?

I was a Pro user on reddit, but I'm not really interested in yet another subscription, even though I understand that may be financially attractive for you. I'd be happy to make a one-time purchase, though.

[-] Xylight@lemmy.xylight.dev 27 points 11 months ago

It'll be the same pricing model. Ultra is a subscription, pro is lifetime. It'll just be an in-app purchase now.

[-] GiddyGap@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

Makes sense if that's the case. Thanks.

That aged poorly!

[-] Oneobi@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

OK, that's good. I was kinda worried that subscription would be the only option.

[-] EtzBetz@feddit.de 20 points 11 months ago

Will Pro become available as IAP, though? I'd maybe specify this. I did read this whole thread as if Pro was cancelled altogether.

Can you do a separate app that acts like a licence key, they way apps like FX Explorer does it? Or does that have the same (or other) issue?

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 7 points 11 months ago

I'm in support of a separate pro version of the app. As a compromise, this could work, too. Though, I would prefer an app without any ad libraries whatsoever.

[-] fleece@pawb.social 12 points 11 months ago

Why do you think this is? Are they pushing for IAPs instead of pro/lite versions of apps? Do you think this is a good or bad move?

[-] ljdawson@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago

Not really sure. Took over a month to resolve last time though

[-] Oneobi@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Guess the other issue is that IAP bypasses family library so each member of your family group needs to cough up.

[-] The_Mixer_Dude@lemmus.org 2 points 11 months ago

It's to crack down on app spam

[-] Ducks@ducks.dev 6 points 11 months ago

Probably a good idea, so many people gave you misdirected grief over that

[-] httpjames@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago

What was the point of having two different versions anyways instead of having one with an IAP?

[-] NightOwl@lemmy.one 18 points 11 months ago

I like the feeling of a clean app that doesn't have any ad integration at all.

[-] andthenthreemore@startrek.website 15 points 11 months ago

If I remember correctly pro came out before IAP was a thing.

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 7 points 11 months ago

The in-app purchases can be buggy with amnesia hitting them once a while, making you install/reinstall just so google remembers you purchased pro. This happens when you have more than 1 google accounts on android.

[-] N1NJ4W4RR10R_@aussie.zone 5 points 11 months ago

Another reason may have been due to the in app purchase stuffing up sometimes. I believe it was a Google thing, but iirc sometimes it would just forget you'd bought pro within the app and start showing ads again.

[-] LdWilmore@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Other than the already mentioned points, the old Sync Pro and Sync Dev didn't include the ad libraries in the app. Sync Dev was on beta track by default IIRC and had an internal test group like the current 100 limited users testing group Sync for Lemmy has.

[-] alphapuggle@programming.dev 4 points 11 months ago

I remember gravity box had a Paypal donation link and pro would be unlocked with your payment code. Not sure if Google Play allows this as it bypasses their 30%

[-] godless@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

Donation links are a violation of Google's T&C and will get an app banned.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 6 points 11 months ago

How does it work for apps that are a part of other services?

Say a company has an app available to all customers that pay for some unrelated service, it would be weird to require them to do the transaction over Google Play?

[-] godless@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

In that case the company could make the app free, but it wouldn't be useable for anyone who didn't own the base service, I guess.

And users who'd want to subscribe to the base service must then be able to do so through the app, that's part of Google's requirements.

[-] UnknownQuantity@lemmy.world 54 points 11 months ago

Apart from removing ads I don't really need anything from ultra. I'd be happy to pay one off fee, but I won't be doing subscription.

[-] generalEdo@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

I agree I will pay a one time fee but the subscription price is to much for my budget of already existing subscriptions. Plus my pihole is doing a fine job removing the ads here at home where I mostly use lemmy.

[-] Powerpoint@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 months ago

This. I want to just pay a one off fee and remove the ads and donate as necessary.

[-] Sup3rlativ3@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

I'm the same. Long long time user and was happy to pay for the app but a subscription isn't going to happen as it's complete overkill.

Very disappointed but I guess I'm staying with thunder.

[-] redDEAD@lemmy.world 48 points 11 months ago

The subscription model is a turn off.

[-] Zoldyck@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

This. I just want an ad-free version. Pay for it one time and that's it.

[-] SRo@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 11 months ago

Adfree one time payment is out now. Update the app.

[-] CMGX78@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

I would make a one time purchase to support the developers, but if they keep the subscription model I'll just use Jerboa, connect or liftoff instead.

[-] wahming@monyet.cc 1 points 11 months ago

Update your app, the option is there now

[-] Kocher@feddit.de 16 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Bought Sync Pro twice, after problems with the IAP. Would gladly buy again just to get rid of the ads, even for a higher price, but subscriptions are a big turn off.

[-] lacabraenlamachina@lemmy.ca 11 points 11 months ago

If and when pro becomes available, I'm in. I'm in regardless, but will pay for pro if available.

[-] SRo@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

So one time payment adfree is out now but ultra lifetime is still missing.

[-] Sup3rlativ3@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

It's there for me, $170. I still don't see a one time purchase for ad removal though
