turkmenistan not being fully in the turk club is fucking hilarious

are they the wrong kind of turk or something, like how the irish weren't white until they were

or is it more about Chinese influence in the area or something

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

turkmen means turkest of the turks by some tellings, they're plenty turk. which is why its funny

the actual reason is beyond a quick google but its probably not being very interested in their shenanigans. i mean they let hungary in, unserious organization

They're Turkmen, but no Turkwomen or Turkchildren, and certainly no non-binary Turks.

Common dictionary, eh? I've actually heard of an unofficial effort ongoing since 1992 to create a "pan-Turkic language" called Ortatürk or Öztürkçe, that basically tries to mathematically average out words from the different Turkic languages to be understandable to as many of their speakers as possible. It's an interesting project, but basically anything "pan-Turkic" gives me bad vibes.

Iirc finno ugric languages aren't actually that closely related to turkic ones

[–] The_Riddler@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

they aren't related at all, actually

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

Yeah basically everyone except the most fringe weirdos agree that Uralic and Turkic langs aren't related

I've actually heard a proposal that the Uralic languages are ultimately related to Indo-European but this is a very controversial proposal

Isn't the relation super distant anyway? Or was I reading some out-of-date literature?

All of these are massive cope. Far right can not even tolerate Turk Muslim alevis here, there is no way they can peacefully coexist with Kazakhs for example.
