Others are advocating for Biden to commute the sentences of federal death row prisoners. His attorney general, Merrick Garland, paused federal executions. Biden had said on the campaign trail in 2020 that he wanted to end the death penalty but he never did, and now, with Trump coming back into office, it’s likely executions will resume. During his first term, Trump presided over an unprecedented number of federal executions, carried out during the height of the pandemic.

Yeah, well watch that not happen.

America's bloodlust can never be satiated.

Trump will probably bring back gladiatorial combat as a Twitter video exclusive.

Put health insurance executives in the ring and I'm on board.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

More likely pay-per-view torture to death.

[–] b3an@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I was hoping Roberson would have gotten a reprieve. Bloodlust’s in Texas won’t listen to anything at all.

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

People have loved gladiatorial combat since time immemorial.

I mean look at the popularity of Pokemon even to this day. It's basically baby's first Mandingo fight. Even kids can see the appeal of sending creatures enslaved to you to fight each other :>

If they convict Luigi fast enough, Joe could do a outstanding move.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He can pardon him now. It's only the crime (or even alleged crime) that needs to have happened before the pardon. Consider Ford's pardon of Nixon, which occurred before Tricky Dick was indicted.

Ah okay, then let's go.

Stop Luigis Detention.

Is it a federal crime? Can't pardon state/local crime

[–] DontRedditMyLemmy@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

As much as I know Demos are better than Repubs, this is one of those areas where they are the same picture. Long live the ruling class!

[–] frezik@midwest.social 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Luigi will almost certainly only face state level charges. The President can only pardon federal charges.

[–] luciferofastora@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

For state level charges, it would have to be the governor, right? Maybe the governor of NY could do him a solid.

[–] luciferofastora@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

I mean, I don't think any US politician could do so without it being career suicide. I don't know Hochul's policies, but she probably didn't get the governorship by being an anticapitalist.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Free Luigi!

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

What could Joe do for state/local crimes? He only has power to pardon federal crimes.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Trump is looking into this delusionality thing.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If he's booked, he's pardonable.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Not by the president unless it's federal crime

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I can't wait for crime to spike in Trump's term and then have Biden blamed for it because of this.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

You don't need to wait. You can just scroll down to the other comments right now! :D

Now pardon everyone convicted of nonviolent marijuana charges.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He already did, IIRC. I may be mistaken.

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Sweetpeaches69@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Correct about him doing it, or OP being mistaken?

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

About him doing it.

Meh. These are people who were deemed too sick and old to be any kind of threat during the fucking Trump administration and released from prison back then because of the pandemic. These people should have all gotten pardons years ago, and it doesn't do anything to alleviate or address all the suffering and human rights abuses being suffered by people who are actually in prisons.

[–] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

These people should have all gotten pardons years ago

So you agree it is good.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It's meh, I'll take it.

[–] wolfpack86@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Commutations, not pardons.

They're still convicted felons, and we must assume deservedly so (I acknowledge some crimes are bullshit, eg marijuana charges).

They don't particularly deserve pardons, they deserve humane sentences for their crimes -- actual rehabilitation, mental health support, etc.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

So which bus did he take for the commute?

[–] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

I thought we established this, he's an Amtrak man, damnit!

[–] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago
[–] djsoren19@yiffit.net 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Good! It was bullshit to just pardon his son. Everyone deserves a chance to escape this hellhole.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Did you really think he would only pardon his son? It's pretty customary for presidents to pardon a bunch at the end of their term.

Good news. I was hoping to see that Leonard Peltier in there. Free Leonard Peltier!
