Are they calling Streaming Sites Streamers? I'm confused.

Yes, it seems like a really recent term to me. I first heard it when the writers strike began and never before that.

When I think streamer I think of people on Twitch or YouTube who stream themselves. No idea where calling streaming services/sites "streamers" came from but it always confuses me.

Yeah lets kill that stupid overlapping bullshit now

I for one will always call them streaming SERVICES. They aint people or real physical entities

[–] Phoenix3875@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

What? Have you never been a streamee?

We called them streaming services. Calling them stream-ers sounds like the media is trying to make them sound cuddly and non hostile.

Lol using closed source apps with paid tiers hiding important features for media 🤣

No need to to make fun of another’s boat matey. We all sail the same high seas. Some venture farther from shores then others and that’s ok.

Mostly just poking fun. It came off as an odd flex (laughing at people who choose to pay for media) while also repping software that has features locked behind a paid tier (a subscription, at that)

For what it's worth Plex has been around since 2009. Emby on '08 and Kodi in '02. So anyone pirating before Jellyfins start around 2018 pretty much would be using either Plex, Emby, or Kodi. Frankly, Emby sucked until just a few years ago, and at least for my purposes for my purposes Jellyfin and Emby don't cut it. Back when I was trying to decide which to use I didn't like Kodi, but I haven't kept up with it so I can't speak on it today.

Plex also hasn't always been subscription only, or at least semi-frequently offer lifetime deals so it's just as reasonable as paying for something like access to real Debrid or whatever.

I-i mean yeah, what losers! Anyone who isn't self hosting bubble upnp streams to connect to their video player are living in the past man!

You could say it was an odd plex.

e stremio+torrentio

Plex had/has a lifetime sub.

What's your go to open source alternative? Jellyfin?

[–] myersguy@lemmy.simpl.website 21 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I was mostly just poking fun. Right now my media is only consumed at one location, so I primarily use Kodi on an Asus mini PC. I will likely keep Kodi as a client, and move to Jellyfin as a server in the future to allow for more clients.

EDIT: I understand downvoting my original tongue in cheek comment. Downvoting my response to someone's follow up question is pretty odd though. Especially the guy signing in with multiple accounts to do so 🤨

[–] aldalire@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

Yea, jellyfin is nice and streaming on iOS from your server isn’t hidden behind a paywall

[–] nevernevermore@kbin.social 15 points 1 year ago

I just canceled our last holdout (appletv+, who put out a surprising amount of S-tier content) in order to pay for real-debrid.

I've switched over from mulitple apps (including plex) to a single stremio+torrentio and I don't understand why I didn't do this sooner. Anything I want to watch streams immediately in 4k. altho I might upgrade to premiumize.me instead because they use usenet and ddl links, so more likely to have older content.

I don't have a proper solution for my iOS phone yet tho, but I rarely watch content on my phone anyway.

What a strange set of choices for series examples.
