Here's a list of tons of leftist movies.

*with the likely exception of a certain movie getting 13 noms (haven't seen it but is seems pretty insulting if well-intentioned)

it wasn't a very good year for The Movies but a lot of good ones in the mix for best picture for a change, and some actual suspense as to who'll win. I hear great things about Nickel Boys from trusted sources and I loved Anora. gonna watch The Substance today but I liked her first movie and it's wild to see a hardcore genre movie in the mix.

as someone with no interest in tennis, threesomes, zendaya, or luca guadaguido (still in movie jail for what he did to suspiria sorry) I am pleased with it getting snubbed

No Other Land making it in for feature length doc also a nice surprise.

(quick EDIT to say I finally watched The Substance and it rocked, some of the best effects work I've seen in years and wonderfully, hilariously unsubtle)

Hundreds of Beavers snubbed

Nosferatu only getting nominated for a few technical awards while a shitty boomer biopic and half of a padded-out Broadway adaptation each get nominated for 8-10 major awards is fucking wild to me.

I didn't think much of Nosferatu outside of the technical aspects tbh! (might be my attachment to the Herzog one.) no interest in the pope mystery or the padded-out Broadway adaptation or in Dylan (nor chalamet or james mangled for that matter). dune pt ii was forgettable OK slop. but for me the main crime (among popular movies) is no Furiosa representation

Oscar who? my favorite movie of 2024 was Love Lies Bleeding

A lot of good movies not even nominated, as usual. LLB was great. There was also:

  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • MaXXXine
  • Monkey Man
  • Furiosa (I thought for sure this would get a tech nomination)
  • Look Back (Hollywood is still against the idea of animation being anything other than children's movies)

Stuff that would get nominated if the Oscars were a serious event with more categories than White Man Biopic and Theater Kid Self-Indulgence:

  • Lovely, Dark, and Deep
  • Cukoo
  • Smile 2
  • Abigail

Stuff I want to see that are probab award-worthy:

  • Immaculate
  • Azrael
  • Heretic

there's a non-zero chance Palestinians will get a couple minutes' airtime on US national TV if you need some real-world interest
