I didn't really want to keep spotlighting American domestic events as I had assumed that shit would calm down pretty quickly, but it appears that the Trump administration, including Musk, are determined to bring down the empire from the inside.

One of the most important lessons of ruling a country - and especially an empire - is to never, ever believe your own propaganda; and yet now we have neo-Nazi failsons disrupting parts of the imperial apparatus and causing general government mayhem because they actually seem to believe in libertarianism; that the state and the capitalists are somehow in opposition, rather than working in lockstep to maximise profit and boost American hegemony around the world.

I'm not so optimistic as to believe that a national collapse is FOUR DAYS AWAY, like those weird anti-China cranks often speculate - the US has at least a decade or two left even under these conditions. But consider the damage being inflicted in these past couple weeks, and extrapolate that over the next four years. Does any living American political figure possess the competency to halt - or even meaningfully slow - the already ongoing decline? And could they achieve power (or even be allowed to do so) after Trump's term is done?

Then, in 2023, a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) memorandum asserted that “radical-traditionalist” Catholics were domestic-terrorism threats and suggested infiltrating Catholic churches as “threat mitigation.” This later-retracted FBI memorandum cited as support evidence propaganda from highly partisan sources.

Trump’s Proposal to Expel Gazans is Incomprehensible: Lula Da Silva - Telesur English

Article

Self-determination is a fundamental principle and must be protected by all States, UN Commissioner Türk said. On Wednesday, Brazilian President Lula da Silva called U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip “incomprehensible.”

“It makes no sense for the president of the United States to meet with the prime minister of Israel and say that they are going to recover and occupy Gaza… and where are the Palestinians going? Where are they going to live?” said the Brazilian leader. Lula questioned whether the United States, with its position of “incentivizing” Israel, is the most appropriate country to “take care of Gaza” and maintained that it is the Palestinians who should do so, after Trump stated that his country “will take control” of the territory.

The Brazilian president pointed to the need to send aid to repair “everything that was destroyed” during the Israeli Army offensive and allow the population of Gaza to “live with dignity.” Lula insisted that what the inhabitants of the Strip suffered during a conflict, in which over 40,000 Palestinians have died, amounts to “genocide.”

The text reads: “Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people, not to Trump!” President Lula was clear in condemning the absurd proposal of the former US president to take control of the territory, ignoring Palestine’s right to self-determination.” On Wednesday, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk also responded to President Trump’s proposal to expel Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to other countries by recalling that “any deportation or forced transfer of people from an occupied territory is strictly prohibited.”

“International law is very clear, self-determination is a fundamental principle and must be protected by all States, as the International Court of Justice has recently underlined,” Türk said. “The suffering of the people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and in Israel has been unbearable, we must enter a new phase to ensure peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of dignity and equality,” he added and insisted on continuing with the successive phases of the current ceasefire, in order to free all hostages and prisoners arbitrarily detained, “and end the war to rebuild Gaza with full respect for international humanitarian law and human rights.”

Claudia Sheinbaum Reaffirms Mexico’s Sovereignty on the 108th Anniversary of the Constitution - Telesur English

Article

In an emotional ceremony held this Wednesday, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, commemorated the 108th anniversary of the promulgation of the Mexican Constitution, reaffirming her commitment to the sovereignty and dignity of the country.

During her speech, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is a free and independent nation, rejecting any attempts at external interference. “We are a free, independent, and sovereign nation,” declared the president before an audience filled with citizens and officials. In a strong message, she asserted that “we are not a colony of anyone nor a protectorate of anyone; they may threaten us with any wrongdoing, but we will never allow them to violate our sovereignty or the dignity of our people and our homeland.”

Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of remembering the legacy of ancestors in challenging times, urging all Mexicans to defend the values that uphold the nation. “In these times that test us as a nation and as a people, we want to remember the promulgation of our Constitution and give our best in defense of Mexico,” she stated.

The president also emphasized her stance on international relations, declaring: “Cooperation yes, subordination no; collaboration yes, submission no. No to interference or intervention; also no to racism or classism.” This message resonates strongly in the current context, marked by political tensions in the region and the recent arrival of U.S. President Donald Trump to power.

Sheinbaum reiterated her commitment to defending the freedoms and democracy of the Mexican people, assuring that her government will always be alert to any threats to national sovereignty. “Any intention to affect our right to be a free people will be faced with courage,” she concluded.

In a call for unity and resilience, Sheinbaum emphasized the value of the Mexican people, stating that “they always know how to rise to the challenges.” With these words, the president seeks to inspire a sense of pride and determination in the population in the face of upcoming challenges.

What are the short term and long term ramifications of the US sovereign wealth fund? Is this just another step in privatisation of every aspect of American life or is it something more?

I saw someone asked about Trump’s sovereign wealth fund a few days ago, and here are some very superficial thoughts about it.

Of course, as Stephenie Kelton already wrote in her blog, SWF is completely non-sensical for the US, who is the one who runs huge trade deficits such that other countries can accumulate the dollars the US spent (by exporting their own goods to earn the dollars) to store in their wealth funds.

In other words, the US can simply print the money it needs to spend, and storing “wealth” in a fund while you are not running a surplus is a completely ridiculous idea.

However, let’s get a bit creative about it. From The Class Politics of the Dollar System by Feygin and Leusder, an interesting paragraph stood out near the end:

Thirdly, the United States should begin to view its deficit not as a problem but as a public resource, and to manage it like energy exporters use sovereign wealth funds to avoid Dutch Disease. To administer this public good, the US should establish a series of public banks to fund specific economic investment initiatives. The Federal Reserve would guarantee the debt of these institutions by discounting it at a penalty rate for reserves or United States Treasury debt or dollar reserves. These securities could thus trade at a slightly higher yield than treasuries and provide investors with an alternative product to general purpose treasuries. The liabilities of these investment vehicles would provide global collateral and promote financial stability while also offsetting the effects of dollar hegemony on domestic industry via permanent, active investment.

So, in theory, here’s what the US can do: Trump’s SWF can offer its debt (guaranteed by the Federal Reserve) at a slightly higher yield than US treasuries. So when the US spends its money as usual, and when the surplus dollars are absorbed back to the US government, instead of buying treasuries, investors could choose and even prefer to purchase the SWF debt offering a slightly better return. Then, the US government can use these new “wealth” from the SWF to fund active investment in domestic industries, thereby circumventing the “national debt” problem.

Notice that nothing has really changed here, what changed is merely the re-framing of US deficit spending from the federal government “racking up national debt” (bad! scary!) into “investing them in wealth fund” (good! prudent!) with extra steps. There is absolutely no need to do anything like this but this roundabout way might play better for the media and the people’s perception of how the government manages its budget.

Again it all depends on the mechanisms of the proposed SWF (no details yet, and I also haven’t double checked the logic of the flow yet), whether the US financial infrastructure actually allows this (I’m not an expert) and whether it is in the class interest of the bourgeoisie to do so.

After collapsing their coalition government with the Centre party last week the floundering norwegian Labour party has formed a new government. Most notably is the addition of former prime minister/NATO ~~ghoul~~ chief and alledged lifelong CIA asset Jens Stoltenberg as the country's new minister of finance. He will no doubt be spending his tenure talking about how important it is to keep investing even more funds in domestic "ethical" arms and munitions manufacturing.

From the AES to ALBA: Burkina Faso activists visit Caracas to support President Maduro - Kawsachuan News

Article Part 1

In a piece written for Kawsachun News, the Thomas Sankara Centre for African Liberation and Unity shares the experience of Burkina Faso delegates in Caracas for the World Anti-Fascist International Festival which coincided with the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro.

The towering peaks of Caracas’ mountaintops captured the attention of the delegates from Burkina Faso even before their airplane hit the ground at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, Venezuela. Venezuela’s imposing mountainous coastline is a sharp contrast to the long stretch of flat savanna that makes up the majority of Burkina Faso’s landscape.

The Burkinabé delegates from grassroots social movements, primarily members of the Thomas Sankara Centre for African Liberation and Unity based in Ouagadougou, had come from far away to visit Venezuela from 7 to 14 January 2025. Their excitement to attend the inauguration of President Nicolas Maduro and to participate in the Global Anti-Fascist Festival in this friendly and inspirational South American country was perhaps unmatched. Afterall, the two countries are at the forefront of the international struggle against imperialism and exploitation.

Witnessing and Experiencing the Bolivarian Revolution

On January 6, comrades Fabrice and Kouss from the Thomas Sankara Centre left Ouagadougou in the early hours of the morning for a 48-hour journey of over 14,000 km to Venezuela. As soon as they arrived at Simon Bolivar airport, the comrades were struck by the internationalist environment. Meetings with various delegates from Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Niger, Congo, Netherlands, India, Nepal, and elsewhere fostered a sense of belonging to a collective cause of social justice, anti-fascism and international solidarity. They would soon be joined by another comrade from the Thomas Sankara Centre, Inem, who arrived on the 8th to a similar atmosphere.

The delegates from Burkina Faso were struck by Venezuela’s technological and architectural progress in the face of sanctions and economic difficulties. Initiatives in the fields of agriculture, energy, and communications illustrated the resilience and ingenuity of the Venezuelan people. These discoveries broadened their perspective and understanding of the possibilities for sustainable development within a socialist state.

Participation in the Global Anti-Fascist Festival, the meeting with President Nicolas Maduro and the Third International Communications Congress provided opportunities to exchange ideas with activists from around the world, attend practical workshops and take part in discussions on strategies and tactics in a shared struggle spanning the Global South.

While in Venezuela, the delegation also sought to forge Pan-African connections between those coming from the African continent and their diasporic counterparts.

ALBA and the AES

Like Venezuela, which is the initiator of Latin America’s anti-imperialist Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA-TCP), Burkina Faso is a part of Africa’s foremost anti-imperialist intergovernmental organization, the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

ALBA was proposed by the rebellious and charismatic military man turned revolutionary leader, Hugo Chavez, and came into fruition in 2004. The AES was formed just two-years ago, first as a defense agreement and then as a working confederation in 2024, by three soldiers who also became revolutionary leaders from the West African Sahel, namely Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso, General Assimi Goïta of Mali, and General Abdourahamane Tiani of Niger.

Both ALBA and the AES have fiercely and boldly defended the self-determination of the peoples of South America and Africa. In ALBA, this has meant working towards greater integration between socialist and progressive states in Latin America and the Caribbean in order to increase economic cooperation and provide social services in the region all while resisting imperialist domination. In the AES, this has meant expelling the French military occupation in all three countries, nationalizing critical resources such as gold and uranium mines, and developing a shared defense and foreign policy with the goal of unifying into a future Pan-African federation.

ALBA references and draws inspiration from historical revolutionary figures in the region, particularly Simón Bolívar, José Martí, and Augusto Sandino. The AES looks up to African revolutionaries of the past such as Thomas Sankara, Modibo Keïta, and Djibo Bakary.

Both ALBA and the AES are at the forefront of the international struggle for a multipolar world, shifting global power from the NATO bloc to the Global South.

Relations Between the Peoples and the States

Yet, when the Burkinabé delegates made their way to Caracas, they found that among ordinary Venezuelans who had come out to support their president, along with delegates who arrived from various other parts of the Americas, some had been paying close attention to the updates and developments unfolding in Burkina Faso and the Sahel, while others had never heard of Burkina Faso before.

Back home in Burkina Faso, the reality is similar. Some Burkinabé have paid attention to Venezuela’s Bolivarian revolution and have followed it for years, yet others are not familiar with the country and its resistance to US hegemonic control.

Guatemala gives Rubio a second deportation deal for migrants being sent home from the US - AP

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said Wednesday his country will accept migrants from other countries who are being deported from the United States, the second deportation deal that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reached during a Central America trip that has been focused mainly on immigration.

Under the agreement announced by Arévalo, the deportees would be returned to their home countries at U.S. expense. “We have agreed to increase by 40% the number of flights of deportees both of our nationality as well as deportees from other nationalities,” Arévalo said at a news conference with Rubio.

Previously, including under the Biden administration, Guatemala had been accepting on average seven to eight flights of its citizens from the U.S. per week. Under President Donald Trump it’s also been one of the countries that have had migrants returned on U.S. military planes. El Salvador announced a similar but broader agreement on Monday. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said his country would accept U.S. deportees of any nationality, including American citizens and legal residents who are imprisoned for violent crimes.

Both Trump and Rubio acknowledged the legal uncertainty of sending Americans to another country for imprisonment. “I’m just saying if we had a legal right to do it, I would do it in a heartbeat,” Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office. “I don’t know if we do or not, we’re looking at that right now.” Rubio called it a very generous offer but said there were “obviously legalities involved. We have a Constitution.”

Immigration, a Trump administration priority, has been the major focus of Rubio’s first foreign trip as America’s top diplomat, a five-country tour spanning Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. The agreements with El Salvador and Guatemala potentially help the Trump administration address what has always been a key sticking point in immigration enforcement since not everyone in the U.S. illegally can be easily sent back home. Venezuela, for example, has been a major source of migrants coming to the U.S. in recent years, but rarely can the U.S. deport Venezuelans back to their home country. But the U.S. already has a robust network set up to send people to several Central American countries.

Guatemala will expand its capacity to receive not just Guatemalans, but also migrants from other countries who will then be repatriated to their home countries. The details still need to be worked out. “However, the permanent answer to immigration is to bring development so that no one has to leave the country,” Arévalo said. To that end, a high-level Guatemalan delegation, including from the private sector, will travel to Washington in the coming weeks. Arévalo also announced the formation of a new border security force that will patrol Guatemala’s borders with Honduras and El Salvador. The force will be made up of police and soldiers and will combat transnational crime of all kinds, he said.

Rubio’s trip has been dogged by the administration’s dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development, including a late Tuesday order abruptly pulling almost all agency staffers off the job. After the news conference with Guatemala’s president, Rubio headed directly to the U.S. Embassy, where staffers and their families who were unsure of their futures gathered to hear from their new boss. The meet-and-greet event was closed to the press, as was an earlier similar event in El Salvador. Both Guatemala and El Salvador have significant USAID missions. In Panama on Sunday before the shut down announcement, Rubio’s embassy event had been open to journalists.

From there Rubio wrapped up his Guatemala stop by visiting a local migration facility near an air force base where deportees are processed for integration back into their home communities. Under the measures announced Wednesday by Guatemala’s president, the number of deportees is expected to rise by as much as 40%. The program has been supported by the U.S. State Department and Department of Homeland Security. Rubio also got a briefing on Guatemala’s counternarcotics efforts, including the interception of at least four shipments of fentanyl precursors since late November totaling 127.5 kilograms (280 pounds), enough to produce more than 114 million doses of the drug.

Rubio, who has offered exemptions to Trump’s sweeping freeze on foreign assistance, has signed waivers to allow funding for both programs to continue, officials said. “This is an example of foreign aid that’s in our national interest. That’s why I’ve issued a waiver for these programs. That’s why these programs are coming back online. And they will be functioning because it’s a way of showing to the American people this is the kind of foreign aid that’s aligned with our foreign policy, with our national interest,” Rubio said.

Rubio also spoke Wednesday with Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente to discuss ways to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, fight fentanyl and transnational criminal organizations and end illegal immigration, according to a State Department statement.

Trump Suggests Musk Found ‘Irregularities’ in Effort at Treasury

https://archive.is/9z6f9

President Donald Trump suggested that Elon Musk’s government efficiency team has found irregularities while examining data at the US Treasury Department, and intimated that may lead the US to disregard some payments.

“There could be a problem, we’ve been reading about that, with Treasuries,” Trump told reporters Sunday on Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he was talking about US government debt, or payments processed through the Treasury Department.

That could be an interesting problem because it could be that a lot of those things don’t count,” he said. “Therefore maybe we have less debt than we thought of.”

Egypt Receives Second Group of Wounded and Sick From Gaza Through the Rafah Crossing - Telesur English

Article

Egypt received the second group of injured and sick people from the Gaza Strip on Sunday through the Rafah crossing, as part of the current ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas. Throughout the day, 34 injured and sick individuals crossed, along with 63 companions, the Egyptian press center indicated in a brief statement.

According to several news agencies yesterday, the Rafah border crossing, closed since last May when Israel occupied the Palestinian side of Rafah, was reopened for a total of 50 patients, only three adults, and 67 caregivers to receive medical treatment. The transfer of injured and sick individuals to Egypt, who will later either remain in the Arab nation or move to other countries, is stipulated in the ceasefire, and crossings are expected to occur daily.

The WHO estimates that around 12,000 Gazans need to be evacuated to receive medical treatment, including complex surgeries after being injured during the war, as well as cancer patients.

Since the start of the war in October 2023, about 5,400 patients have been evacuated, most of them before the Rafah crossing was closed and only around 400 afterward through the Israeli border crossing at Kerem Shalom, according to WHO figures prior to the current ceasefire. Hundreds of Egyptian aid convoys have been sent to the Rafah border, Gaza’s only crossing that does not enter Israel. Negotiations for the second phase of the deal, which calls for a permanent ceasefire, are expected to begin on Monday, February 3rd.

Ecuadorian Tariffs on Mexican Products Have Minimal Impact: Sheinbaum - Telesur English

Article

Imposing tariffs on Mexico makes no sense whatsoever and sets a very bad precedent, a former Ecuadorian trade minister said. On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum downplayed the impact of the 27% tariffs that Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa imposed on Mexican products.

During her press conference, she stated that imports from Ecuador account for only 0.4% of Mexico’s total imports. Due to Ecuador’s minimal weight in Mexico’s trade balance, Sheinbaum did not announce any retaliatory measures and joked, saying that “Mexican shrimp are tastier than Ecuadorian ones.”

On Monday, the far-right President Noboa announced that he would impose a 27% tariff on all Mexican products. He justified his decision by stating that the current non-oil trade between the two countries constitutes an “abuse” against Ecuador, an Andean country that has a trade deficit with Mexico.

Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador in April 2024 after the Noboa administration ordered its police forces to storm the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas. The text reads, “Imitating Trump, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced the imposition of 27% tariffs on all products from Mexico. Noboa’s clumsy bravado has provoked ridicule because Mexico’s dealings with this country are insignificant.”

In 2024, Mexican exports to Ecuador totaled US$446 million, a figure that represents just 0.07% of Mexico’s total exports worldwide. During the same period, Mexico achieved a trade surplus of US$108 million in its transactions with Ecuador. In Ecuador, Noboa’s decision sparked strong criticism from productive sectors. Former Trade Minister Julio Jose Prado stated that imposing 27% tariffs on Mexico “makes no sense whatsoever and sets a very bad precedent” because it harms Ecuador far more than it does Mexico.

He also pointed out that Ecuador’s unilateral decision will lead to price increases in essential goods imported from Mexico, such as medicines, vehicles, household appliances, computers, pipes, and raw materials for the food and manufacturing industries. Prado emphasized that Ecuador could even face a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO) because “we have no valid reason” to impose tariffs on Mexico, given that there is no balance of payments crisis, nor is there an excessive appreciation of the dollar against the peso.

“Trump-style? While Trump, with a similar measure, managed to bring Mexico to the negotiating table to discuss migration issues, Ecuador neither has the power nor the capacity to force Mexico to negotiate anything. There is no conflict to resolve. We are creating an unnecessary problem with consequences we do not yet understand,” the former minister said.

Noboa is such a failure, no one is going to remember him, not even Trump or Rubio gives a shit about him, he should just do like Dina Boluarte and stfu.

Venezuelans Commemorate the 33rd Anniversary of the 1992 Rebellion - Telesur English

Article

On February 4, 1992, the actions of Commander Hugo Chavez paved the way for the Bolivarian Revolution. On Tuesday, Venezuelans remember a crucial moment in their nation’s history: the day when a group of patriotic military officers, led by Commander Hugo Chavez, decided to rise up against a political system that had betrayed the people.

Yesterday, Diosdado Cabello, vice president of the Unified Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), announced that progressive forces in his country would hold a march in Caracas to mark the Day of National Dignity. The massive mobilization will begin at the Venezuela Square and move along the capital city’s main avenues until reaching Los Proceres boulevard.

February 4, 1992, marked the beginning of a process that would forever change the country’s course and pave the way for the Bolivarian Revolution. More than just a military uprising, February 4 was a reflection of popular discontent with neoliberal policies that had plunged Venezuela into misery and neglect.

“The social explosion of the Caracazo in 1989 had already exposed the discontent of a people tired of injustice, corruption, and the handing over of national resources to foreign interests. Chavez and his comrades understood that it was time to step forward and change history,” the outlet Con el Mazo Dando explained.

The text reads, “February 4, 1992: ‘National Dignity Day’ is celebrated in Venezuela. It is the anniversary of the civil-military rebellion, known as 4F, which was commanded by the Bolivarian Revolution leader Hugo Chavez, along with a group of comrades from the Armed Forces.”

“Although the action did not achieve its immediate objective, it planted a revolutionary seed that would flourish with Chavez’s rise to power in 1999,” it added, recalling that the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution described what had happened as a setback ‘for now.’ “The ‘For Now’ he uttered that day was not a defeat but a commitment that the struggle was only beginning. And so it was: the people awakened and, with Chavez at the helm, began building a new model based on sovereignty, social justice, and participatory democracy,” Con el Mazo Dando pointed out.

“Today, under the leadership of President Nicolas Maduro, the spirit of February 4 remains more alive than ever. Facing imperialist attacks and adversity, the Bolivarian Revolution stays on the course set by Chavez, with a firm conviction to defend Venezuela’s independence and the well-being of its people,” it added. “February 4 is not just a historical date. It is a symbol of struggle, dignity, and resistance. It is the day when the hope for a truly free and sovereign nation was born,” Con el Mazo Dando concluded.
