How can we help Kbin with their spam problem without having to defederate them?

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Why is is such an issue for Kbin relative to Lemmy (like lemmy.world etc)? Are the larger Lemmy instances better funded or have better mod recruitment or is it a geographical thing?

[–] JWBananas@startrek.website 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

/kbin speaks ActivityPub but is an entirely different software stack. It has some big bugs with federation (specifically around admin actions like spam removal).

The primary instance (kbin.social) also doesn't have a very good team of mods/admins keeping up with the influx of spam.

Lemmy was about two years old when the reddit exodus happened, whereas /kbin had only been around for about a month. Its sole developer/admin is very overwhelmed just trying to keep everything running (and trying to, you know, live).

The project needs help, but I don't think Ernest has enough trustworthy people in his circle to delegate responsibilities.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How can we privately like donate and try help them make sure they have the resources they need?

[–] JWBananas@startrek.website 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

You can buy Ernest a coffee. That will certainly help keep the lights on. But you should probably take a look at the recent posts on his profile.

In addition to the personal issues, he hasn't been able to meet milestones. He gets sponsored by the same group as Lemmy's developers, and if he isn't reaching milestones, he isn't getting paid. And it sounds like his savings is running out.

While money certainly helps, it sounds like it's only the tip of the iceberg. Short of sponsoring a personal assistant and a project manager, I'm not really sure how we can help.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

We should probably figure this stuff out if we're to survive. I'm actually worried now, the internet needs a Wikipedia-type Reddit that is sustainable and not unduly putting so much burden (financial and otherwise) on one random (but awesome) dev

and trying to, you know, live

Developers truly are the most selfish breed of bastard.

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I don’t know, but 90% of the spam I see is from new accounts on Kbin.

I’m all for diversity in the Fediverse, but something’s not working right over there.

Mod actions don't federate over so even if it's removed over there we still see it on Lemmy.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

I'm hoping mbin, the new kbin fork, receives more active development to fight this.

[–] 1984 9 points 1 year ago

Couldn't come up with a question yourself eh? :)

How do I survive without pooping for 3 days? Don't ask why.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

Eat nothing and stay still. No caffeine or anything like that. Take some Immodium

Edit: for real tho, y? You're not "PUNKDing someone or in the planning stage, are you?

What happened to trick or treating. I bought big candy bars last year and only got two groups. It was so sad

[–] Toribor@corndog.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

When I bought my house a few years ago I was really excited to have trick or treaters. I'd been in apartments or dorms for the previous decade and grew up in a rural area so I'd never really gotten to go out myself, let alone give out candy to trick or treaters. I'd bought like 24 big candy bars and when I was putting up some decorations in my yard I got into a conversation with my neighbors about Halloween and asked them about how many trick or treaters they usually get.

They told me they thought they probably got around 200-300 the previous year. I thought they were joking but no, they were definitely not.

I planned to spend Halloween playing board games with a few friends and answering the door every so often to give out candy and see kids in cool costumes. But I bought waaaaaay more candy and it still wasn't enough.

I basically didn't sit down until we finally turned out the lights and hid for the rest of the night. There was a literal line of kids all the way down my driveway... multiple times throughout the night... Saw a couple fun costumes but a surprising amount of kids (especially around high school age) weren't wearing any costume at all. Just dragging giant garbage bags full of candy.

Even with my neighbors warning I was totally blown away. Completely outside my expectations.

I guess what I'm saying is that I wish I could share some with you.

Its coming, little buddy πŸŽƒ u should, like, put out a table or stand you dont care about and put something "neat" for people and passersby to play with or check out.

Like a zen sand garden box thing, or build a giant one and let people know to feel free to engage with it and you won't send them away or something

Here in Australia it is rarer, and surprisingly early in the afternoon, but the only way your house gets a visit is if it is heavily decorated. Kids don't want to annoy neighbours not in on the fun. Make sure you dress up the house so they know to make a try.

Magnets, how do they work?

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They're powered by the blood sacrifices of wizards. The modern computing Era has put a real dent in the wizard population. Not many people are willing to talk about the problem. When I asked my representatives to place sane limits on licensed wizard hunting to preserve their population, I was basically laughed out of the room. It's a serious problem!

What’s the best way to implement Access Control Protocol on my WebDAV server that uses generic streams for resources, so that it can be agnostic to storage systems through adapters like the file system adapter?

I was thinking to have another kind of adapter for users/groups/permissions. Or should I add that functionality to the existing adapters? I’m not sure how to proceed.

It also needs to work with generic authenticators, like this one that authenticates with PAM.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Great question, you really higlighted the problem. You already know the answer for this question and I believe that this is the perfect challenge for you and I think you are ready to be this project's manager. You have my full suport, just let me know before compromising any budget. Don't thank me for the oportunity, thank yourself for your proactivity.

What's the best horror film for Halloween?

[–] Krejall@ttrpg.network 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The best horror film for Halloween isn't a horror film, exactly. It's a cartoon miniseries called Over the Garden Wall. We put it on for the Halloween party every year.

[–] Taako_Tuesday@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Oh hell yeah, we just finished this year's rewatch last night

If you get a common cold in spring/summer, shouldn't you call it a "common warm"?

Why does everything I try to fix around my house somehow end up worse?

Because if it ain't broke, you're not supposed to take it apart and fix it.

Because you don’t know the tricks of the trade like professionals do

This is so true. Random example:

When I got my first car it was old (94) and therefore 'simple' compared to modern day cars with ECUs, etc. So when I had an accident and bent the small bar that sticks out of the front axle for the wheel to go on I took to fixing it.

I bought some tools: A wedge thing for removing the gasket and ring that held it in place. Pliers, wrenches, etc. Obviously the Haynes repair manual too!

After about two days I had a full toolbox. I was sweaty and covered in oil. But this bent bar was NOT budging.

I asked for help on a UK fan forum for my make of car. Yes - Nissan Micra's had a fucking forum for enthusiasts!

A nice gentleman offered to come and fix it - his only payment being to give him a shout out on the forum.

He came round took one look at it and my tools, scoffed, and grabbed a long 6 foot hollow pole out of his van. Slots it on the end of the bent rod and pushes the other end.

He chucked the tyre on and it was straight. Shook my hand and said "see ya" and drove off.

30 seconds vs 2 days.

I've not bothered fixing anything since. I rely on pros when I can afford it.

How/where do I find approximatly $10,000,000 cos engineering just aint gonna cut it.

I am willing to sacrifice morality and possibly a portion of my soul.

If anyone had a question to ask they would make a post here themselves. πŸ€”

[–] JWBananas@startrek.website 6 points 1 year ago

Some people don't think their thoughts are good enough to warrant their own post. But they might be more receptive to making a comment.
